Keeping your wrists neutral while typing

You probably arrived here because your wrists feel it after a long day at the keyboard. We can't diagnose that and won't try - but a handful of equipment heights and habits keep the wrist straight while you type, and they come straight from OSHA's own wording.

If your wrist bends upward while you type, the wrist is almost never the thing that is wrong. Something under your hands is at the wrong height, or your hands have picked up a habit to cope with that height. There are only a handful of causes, and every one of them is a matter of where a piece of equipment sits — which is good news, because geometry is fixable and it is mostly free.

This is the troubleshooting companion to wrist and keyboard position, which works through the one deep geometric argument in detail: why the little flip-out feet on the back of the board tilt it the wrong way, and what negative tilt is. We are not going to repeat that here. This page is the checklist version — the specific heights and habits that keep the wrist straight while the fingers move, and the order to check them in.

OSHA writes the whole target in one sentence, on its keyboards page: “Elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard and hang comfortably to the side of the body.” Read that as two instructions rather than one — a height (keyboard level with your elbows) and a position(arms in close at your sides) — and most typing-wrist trouble turns out to be one of the two being off. We will take them in that order, then the habits that sit on top of them.

The wrist bends because the keyboard is above your elbows

Start with the height, because it is upstream of everything else. When the keyboard sits higher than your seated elbows, you have two ways to reach the keys: shrug the shoulders up to meet it, or leave the elbows where they are and hinge the hands upward at the wrist. Almost everyone does the second without noticing, and that upward hinge is the exact angle you came here about.

OSHA’s Good Working Positions page describes the neutral state as “Hands, wrists, and forearms are straight, in-line and roughly parallel to the floor.” A forearm parallel to the floor, with the elbow hanging at your side, describes a surface at your seated elbow height and no higher. That is the same anchor ANSI/HFES 100-2007 uses: its input-surface height equations all reference elbow height rather than a fixed number, because elbow height is the thing the keyboard is supposed to meet.

Now measure that against the desk most people own. A conventional fixed desk tends to sit around 29″, and for the median adult that is above seated elbow height — so the standard desk starts the wrist off slightly too high before anything else has gone wrong. HFES 100 puts the sit-only adjustment range a keyboard surface should cover at 22–28.3″; the ordinary 29″ desk is at or above the top of that range. The default, in other words, is a keyboard a touch too high and a wrist quietly making up the difference all day.

The fix is to close the gap between the keyboard and your elbows, and there are only two directions to close it from. Bring yourself up: raise your chairuntil your forearms come parallel to the floor with your elbows at your sides, and if your feet leave the floor, put them on a footrest rather than letting them dangle. Or bring the surface down: a desk that descends far enough, or a tray under a desk that does not. Whichever way you go, the target is the same OSHA sentence — elbow height, not desk height. Work out your own number first, because it decides the rest of the page.

Stop planting the wrist and stretching the fingers

The next cause is a habit rather than a height, and it survives even a perfectly-adjusted desk. It is the instinct to drop the heel of the palm onto the desk — or onto the front edge of it — and pivot the hand from that anchor to reach the keys.

Watch what that does to the geometry. Once the wrist is planted, it is pinned at a fixed angle, and the only parts left free to travel are the fingers. So the fingers stretch forward and sideways to cover keys the whole hand should have moved to, and the wrist holds whatever bend the plant started it at. That is neither “straight” nor “in-line”; it is a hinge held under load while the fingers do gymnastics around it.

The alternative is to let the hands float: keep them moving as a single unit over the keys and let the forearms do the travelling from the elbow, so the wrist stays neutral and the fingers only ever reach the key directly under them. Floating feels like work at first, and that is the tell — the effort has moved back into the forearm, which is where the desk had been quietly doing a job your own arm is meant to do. The armrest is the honest place to offload some of that: OSHA’s chairs guidance is that armrests should support the elbows and forearms without making you shrug, which supports the arm from underneath instead of pinning the wrist from below.

One specific plant is worth singling out: the hard front edge of the desk pressing across the underside of a moving wrist. We are describing a contact geometry, not a diagnosis — a rigid edge under a joint that is travelling is simply a worse place to bear weight than a flat, level surface at the same height. If your wrists find that edge, the tell is usually that the keyboard is set too far back and you are reaching over the lip to get to it.

Flat or slightly negative — never feet-up

This one gets its own heading only so it is not skipped, because the full version lives elsewhere. The flip-out feet on the back of almost every keyboard raise its far edge, which slopes the keys up and away from you and asks the wrist to bend up further to sit on them. Putting the feet down is the single cheapest correction in this whole topic, and it reverses the most common wrong thing in the category.

Flat is better than feet-up; a slight negative tilt, with the far edge lower than the near edge, is better than flat, because a surface that slopes gently away from you stays closer to in-line with a forearm that already slopes gently down from the elbow. That is the entire argument of wrist and keyboard position, deduced step by step, and we are deliberately not re-running it here. What matters for this checklist is the direction: down, then away, never up. Most keyboards go flat and no further, so if negative tilt is what you are after, that is where a tray or one of the boards that publish a real negative angle comes in.

The mouse is the other hand, and it drifts out

Half of this problem is not the keyboard at all. The mouse hand obeys the same OSHA sentence — elbows “hang comfortably to the side of the body” and “stay in close”— and it is the hand that breaks the rule most often, because the mouse tends to drift outward across the desk.

The usual culprit is a full-size keyboard. A number pad pushes the letter keys left of the board’s physical centre, so a keyboard lined up on the desk puts your hands off to the left and shoves the mouse a hand’s width further right than it needs to be. From out there, the right arm has to reach, the shoulder rotates open, and the wrist plants and pivots to cover ground it should not have to — the same planting problem as the typing hand, just triggered by distance instead of habit.

Two geometric fixes. Keep the mouse at the same height as the keyboard, on the same surface or the same tray, so neither hand is working at a different level from the other. And bring it in close: a smaller keyboard with no number pad lets the mouse sit just to the side of the letters instead of out past your elbow, and moving the keyboard you already own further left is cheaper still. If the pointing hand is where your trouble actually is, a device that keeps the hand planted still while the ball or sensor does the work is a different geometry again — that is the mouse-versus-trackball question, and shape is what the ergonomic mouse picks are sorted on.

The palm rest is for the rests, not the typing

The palm rest is the most misread object on the desk, and the name is the reason. It reads as an instruction — rest your wrists here — and that is precisely the thing not to do while you are typing.

A rest is designed to support the heel of the palm during the pauses: the moments between bursts when your hands are still and parked. Press on it whilethe fingers are moving and you have recreated the planting problem on purpose — the wrist is pinned to the pad at a fixed angle and the fingers stretch to compensate. It is a place to park the hand between sentences, not a pivot to type from.

If you keep one, the geometry that matters is its height relative to the space bar. A rest level with the front of the keyboard lets the hand land flat when it comes down to park; a rest that stands taller than the board bends the wrist up when you settle on it, and one that sits lower bends it down — either way it stops being neutral the moment it is doing its job. Level, and only during the pauses, is the whole of it. We have not tested any rest and are not steering you toward or away from one; this is a description of where the angle goes, nothing more.

Where a keyboard tray earns its place

Nearly everything above is free: a chair adjustment, feet flat, the mouse pulled in, the hands floating rather than planted. There is one common situation where the honest answer is hardware, and it is worth naming precisely so you do not buy a tray you did not need.

That situation is a fixed desk that is simply too talland cannot come down — a solid-top desk at that conventional 29″, with no descending mechanism and no way to raise your chair far enough without your feet leaving the floor. HFES 100 puts the sit-only input surface range at 22–28.3″; the desk is above it, so the surface the keyboard needs is one the desk cannot provide. A tray hangs the input surface below the desktop, drops it toward your elbow height, and usually tilts it away from you as a bonus — two of this page’s fixes in one bracket.

The constraint is the one desk figure OSHA does publish. It prescribes no desk height at all, but it does say leg clearance under the desktop “should generally be between 20-28 inches (50-72 cm) high.” A tray hangs into exactly that clearance, so a tray that drops far enough to meet your thighs has swapped a wrist angle for a knee one. What this page is not

This needs saying plainly, because this is the corner of the internet where it gets breached most often. Nothing here prevents, treats or cures anything, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. You have read pages that connect a wrist angle straight to a named medical condition. We do not do that, for a simple reason: Stephen is an enthusiast who reads standards documents and spec sheets, not an ergonomist, a physiotherapist or a doctor, and neither is anyone else here.

What OSHA publishes is a description of a neutral working posture. What HFES 100 publishes is a set of surface heights anchored on elbow height. Neither is a treatment protocol and neither presents itself as one. Everything above is a claim about geometry— where your elbows are, where the keyboard is relative to them, which way the surface tilts, how far out the mouse has drifted — and every one of those is something you can check on your own desk in about a minute. That is the kind of claim this site is allowed to make, and the only kind it makes.

If something in your wrists hurts, and it keeps hurting, that is a conversation for someone with a license, and no page on an affiliate site is a substitute for it. What we can offer is the honest shape of the problem: the wrist bends up for a small number of equipment reasons, the biggest one is a keyboard sitting above your elbows, the rest are habits and tilt and a mouse that wandered off, and most of the fixes cost nothing at all. Fix the height first, then the habits, and leave the medicine to the people who trained for it.

Common questions

Why do my wrists bend upward when I type?

The usual reason is geometric: the keyboard is sitting higher than your seated elbows, so your hand has to hinge up at the wrist to reach the keys. OSHA’s keyboards page puts the target plainly — “Elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard and hang comfortably to the side of the body.” A conventional fixed desk tends to sit around 29″, which is above most adults’ seated elbow height, so the default desk quietly asks the wrist to bridge the gap. Should I rest my wrists on something while typing?

Not while your fingers are actually moving. A palm rest is named for the heel of the palm and is built for the pausesbetween bursts of typing, not as a surface to press on mid-word. Park your wrist on a pad and pivot your hand from there and you have pinned the wrist at a fixed angle and handed the reaching to your fingers — the opposite of the “straight, in-line” geometry OSHA describes. We are describing the mechanism, not making a recommendation for or against any rest; the tilt half of this is worked through on wrist and keyboard position.

Where should the mouse sit to keep my wrist straight?

At the same height as the keyboard and as close to your body as the keyboard is — OSHA’s wording is that the elbows should “hang comfortably to the side of the body” and “stay in close.”The most common violation is a number pad pushing the mouse a hand’s width out to the right, so the arm reaches and the wrist plants and pivots to cover the distance. A smaller keyboard lets the mouse come back in; a device that keeps the hand still rather than dragging it is the trackball question, and shape is the ergonomic mouse one.

Flat keyboard, or feet flipped up?

Feet down. The flip-out feet raise the far edge of the board, which tips the keys up and away and bends the wrist further up to meet them — flat beats feet-up, and a slight negative tilt (far edge lower than the near edge) beats flat. That deduction is the whole of wrist and keyboard position, so we will not re-run it here. If your board cannot go flatter than zero, the tilt becomes a hardware question — a keyboard tray or one of the boards that publish a negative angle.

Do I actually need a keyboard tray?

Only in one common case: your desk is fixed, too tall, and cannot come down. ANSI/HFES 100 puts a sit-only input surface’s adjustment range at 22–28.3″, and a conventional 29″ desk sits at or above the top of that, so the keyboard starts life too high. A tray drops the input surface below the desktop toward your elbows, and most trays tilt away from you into the bargain.
