Clamp vs grommet monitor mount
Most arms — the Ergotron LX and the Humanscale M2.1 among them — come with both a C-clamp and a grommet mount in the same box. So the real question is never which mount is better. It is which one your desk will physically take.

Here is the thing almost nobody tells you before you open the box: you have probably already bought both mounts. The arms worth buying — the Ergotron LX, the heavier Ergotron HX, the Humanscale M2.1 — ship with a C-clamp and a grommetmount in the same kit. So “clamp vs grommet” is not a shopping decision at all. It is an installation decision you make on the day, and the thing that decides it is not the arm. It is your desk.
That matters because the two are not ranked options where one is the upgrade. They are two different ways of anchoring the same pole to the same desk, and each one can physically go where the other one can’t. Once either is fitted, the arm reaches exactly the same positions — the same height and reach, the same everything. What we are really comparing is a set of constraints on your furniture, not a set of features on the product.
The two mounts, and why the box contains both
A C-clamp is a jaw that hooks over the front edge of the desk. You slide it on, drop a foot plate under the overhang, and turn a knob or bolt until it grips the top and bottom of the edge. Nothing is drilled; nothing is permanent. The Ergotron LX and the Humanscale M2.1 both mount this way straight out of the box, and it is the method most people use because it is fast and it commits to nothing.
A grommet mount goes throughthe desktop. It uses a hole in the surface — either the factory cable grommet your desk may already have, or one you drill — and clamps the mount to the desk from above and below with a bolt and a washer, sandwiching the full thickness of the top. Humanscale’s M2.1 install manual shows this as the “through-desk” option, and Ergotron publishes it as the alternate method on the same arms. It is permanent, or as permanent as the hole you use.
Why do manufacturers bother shipping both? Because desks are wildly inconsistent and they have no idea what yours looks like. Rather than sell two SKUs, they hand you both mounts and let your desk pick. That is the whole design intent, and it is why the honest version of this comparison is a checklist about your furniture rather than a verdict about a product.
Reversibility: the line that decides it for a lot of people
The clearest real difference is what happens when you want it gone. A clamp comes off with the same Allen key that put it on, and it leaves nothing behind — no hole, no mark, assuming you used the pad and didn’t over-crank it. That makes the clamp the default for anyone who rents, shares a desk, expects to move, or simply isn’t sure yet. You can undo the entire decision in under a minute.
A grommet mount is only reversible if it used a hole that was already there. If your desk shipped with a cable grommet in a usable spot, dropping the mount into it is no more committing than a clamp — pull it out later and the desk is exactly as it was. But if there is no hole and you drill one, that is it: you have permanently modified the desk, and no amount of unbolting brings the material back. That is not a reason to avoid the grommet. It is a reason to be sure the desk is yours to modify before you reach for a drill.
Desk thickness: the number you have to measure
A clamp only works inside a window of edge thicknesses. Too thin and the jaw has nothing solid to bite; too thick and it physically will not close over the edge. Both makers publish this: the Humanscale M2.1 instructions and the Ergotron LX page each state a desk-edge thickness range the clamp is designed for. We are deliberately not printing a specific figure here, because the exact number is the arm’s to state and it differs between models — the move is to take a tape measure to your desk’s edge and compare it to whatever your chosen arm publishes, the same way you would check its VESA and weight ratings against your monitor.
The grommet mount has a thickness limit too, but it lives at the other end of the scale. Because it bolts through the top, it needs the desk to be nothickerthan the bolt is long — a very deep butcher-block or a double-thickness top can outrun the hardware. It also needs the material around the hole to be solid enough to take the clamping force without crushing. For the great majority of desks, both mounts are inside their limits and the thickness question never bites. It is the unusual desk — very thin, very thick, or a soft foam-cored top — where the number rules one method out, which is exactly why you measure rather than assume.
Where each can physically go
This is the section that actually resolves most standoffs, and it is pure geometry. A clamp needs three clearances at once: an accessible front edge, clear overhang under that edge so the foot plate has somewhere to sit, and clear space behind the deskfor the pole and the monitor’s travel. Take away any one of the three and the clamp is out:
- An apron, drawer or crossbar right under the lipfills the space the clamp foot needs, so the jaw can’t close on the edge.
- A desk against a wallremoves the room behind it that the arm and screen need to move through — and often the ability to reach behind to tighten the knob at all.
- A thick, rolled, or obstructed edgethe jaw won’t fit over ends the clamp before it starts.
A grommet mount sidesteps all three. It doesn’t touch the edge, so an apron or a drawer under the lip is irrelevant; it bolts down through the field of the desktop, so it works with the desk hard against a wall; and it doesn’t care how thick or awkward the front edge is. What it needs instead is a spot on the surface— away from any frame member directly underneath — where a hole can live and the bolt has clearance below. That is a much easier condition to satisfy on a wall-hugging or drawer-heavy desk, which is precisely the desk a clamp struggles with. Stability and where the load actually lands
A monitor arm is a lever, and a lever concentrates force. With a clamp, all of that force is delivered to a single edge of the desk. On a solid, well-built top that is completely fine — the arm makers rate their clamps for it and publish a weight range the LX and HX are tested to. But the clamp’s hold is only as good as the edge it grips, and a flimsy, flexing, or hollow edge can let the whole arm nod or creep under a heavy display, especially at full extension.
A grommet mount spreads its grip across the full thickness of the desktop and pulls straight down through it, which tends to give a very solid anchor — the load is fed into the strongest axis of the material rather than pinching an edge. If you are running a heavy display, or a dual-monitoror ultrawide setup that swings a lot of mass out over the desk, the grommet is often the more reassuring of the two. Neither is fragile when used within the arm’s published limits — and confirming your screen is inside those limits is a job for our monitor-weight numbers, not a guess.
What each does to the desk itself
Both methods put pressure on the desk, just in different ways. The clamp’s risk is cosmetic and reversible: over-tighten it on a veneer, a lacquered edge, or a laminate-over-particleboard top and you can leave a dent or a crush mark on the edge. The fix is the pad every arm ships for the purpose and a firm rather than heroic turn of the knob. The mark, if you make one, is on an edge you can often hide, and nothing is drilled.
The grommet’s risk is structural and permanent: you are making a hole. Done into a factory grommet it is no risk at all; drilled fresh, the hazards are a cracked or chipped surface if the top is brittle, delamination if a laminate skin lifts around the cut, and the simple fact that the hole is forever. Weigh a recoverable cosmetic risk against a one-way structural one, and pick the one your desk — and your willingness to modify it — can live with.
How to choose in five minutes
Run your desk through four questions, in order, and it will usually answer itself:
- Is the desk yours to modify?If no — you rent, it’s shared, you’ll move — start from the clamp and only fall back to a grommet hole that already exists.
- Is there a clear, accessible front edge with space behind and under it? If yes, the clamp is on the table. If the desk is against a wall, or has a drawer or apron under the lip, the clamp is likely out and the grommet is in.
- Does the edge thickness fall inside the arm’s published range? Measure it; compare it to the manual. If it doesn’t, the grommet is your route — assuming the top isn’t too thick for the bolt.
- Is there already a grommet hole where you want the arm?If yes, the “permanent” objection to the grommet disappears and it becomes as easy as the clamp.
If your desk fights bothmounts — no clampable edge and no hole you’re willing to drill — that is a real outcome, and the honest answer is that an arm may not be the tool. A monitor stand needs neither a clamp nor a hole; it just sits on the surface. We would rather send you to a standthat fits than sell you an arm that can’t attach.
What none of this changes: the goal
Worth stating plainly, because the mount can feel like the whole decision when it isn’t. Whichever mount you use, the arm reaches the same target, and the target is OSHA’s: the top of the monitor “at or slightly below eye level”, the center “15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level”, and the screen “between 20 and 40 inches” from your eyes. The mount is just how the pole gets anchored; the clamp and the grommet reach that geometry identically. So do not agonise over the mount as if it affects your posture. It affects whether the arm can be fitted at all, and nothing else.
One last separation, because it trips people up. The mount is how the arm meets the desk. The VESApattern — the 75mm or 100mm square of holes on the back of the display — is how the arm meets the monitor. They are two independent interfaces, and a desk being clamp-friendly tells you nothing about whether your screen is VESA-ready, which is a separate check on the VESA and weight-ratings page.

Common questions
Is a clamp or a grommet mount better?
Neither, and any page that picks one is answering a different question than the one that matters. Both come in the box on arms like the Ergotron LX and the Humanscale M2.1, and both hold the arm equally well once fitted — the geometry you can reach afterward is identical. What differs is where each can physically go. A clampis reversible and fast but needs an accessible front edge with clear space behind it and a thickness inside the arm’s published range. A grommetis permanent but works where a clamp can’t — against a wall, on a thick or obstructed edge. The right answer is whichever one your desk allows.
Can I use a clamp mount if my desk is pushed against the wall?
Usually not, and this is the single most common reason a clamp fails. A C-clamp works by wrapping under the desk and gripping the top and bottom of the front edge, so it needs clear space behindthe desk for the arm’s pole and the display’s back-and-forth travel, and clear space under the edge for the clamp jaw. A desk shoved against a wall usually has neither. That is exactly the situation the grommet mount exists for: it bolts down through the desktop wherever you put the hole, so a wall behind the desk is irrelevant to it. Will a desk clamp damage my desk?
It can, and the risk is concentrated in two places. First, the clamp puts leverage on a single edge — a loaded arm is a lever, and all of that load lands where the jaw grips. On a soft or veneered top, or a particleboard core under a laminate skin, cranking the clamp too hard can dent, mar or crush the edge. Manufacturers ship a rubber or foam pad between the jaw and the desk for exactly this reason; use it, and tighten it firm rather than gorilla-tight. A grommet spreads its load over a washer and the full thickness of the desktop instead, which many people find reassuring on a soft top — at the cost of a permanent hole.
Do I have to drill a hole for a grommet mount?
Only if your desk doesn’t already have one. Many desks ship with a factory grommet— the round cable pass-through, usually with a plastic cap — and a grommet mount is designed to drop straight into that opening. If yours has one in a usable spot, the “permanent” part is already done for you and the mount is no more work than a clamp. If it doesn’t, a grommet mount means drilling a hole through your desktop, which is genuinely permanent and not for a rented desk. How thick a desk can a clamp handle?
Every arm publishes a range, and you have to read it off the manual rather than guess. The Humanscale M2.1 installation instructions and the Ergotron LX page each state a desk-edge thickness the clamp is designed to fit between — too thin and the jaw has nothing to bite, too thick and it won’t close. So measure your desk’s edge thickness with a tape, then compare it to the arm’s stated window before you buy. A very thick edge, or a thin edge with a drawer or apron right behind it, is a classic case where the clamp is out and the grommet is in.
Which mount is better for renters?
The clamp, almost every time. It leaves no permanent mark: it grips the edge, and it comes off in seconds with an Allen key, taking nothing of the desk with it. A grommet mount either uses a hole that was already there or requires you to make one — and you cannot un-drill a desktop. If you rent, or the desk isn’t yours to modify, or you expect to move, the clamp’s reversibility is worth more than any of the grommet’s advantages. Just confirm the edge is clamp-friendly first.
