A monitor arm can mark a desk, and on the wrong top it can do worse. The risk is specific and almost entirely preventable once you know where it lives: in the mount you choose and the surface it grips.

First, separate one thing out, because it removes half the confusion. A monitor arm has two completely different connections. The mount you choose decides most of the risk
Before you blame the arm, look at the mount, because a clamp and a grommet threaten a desk in opposite ways. A C-clamp hooks over the front edge and grips the top and bottom of that edge. A loaded arm is a lever, and a lever concentrates force, so all of that load is delivered to a small patch of a single edge. On a solid, well-built top that is completely fine. On a soft, veneered, or lacquered edge, cranking the clamp too hard can leave a dent or a crush mark. Glass tops: the one to take seriously
Glass changes the stakes. A tempered-glass top strongly resists the everyday scratching that marks wood, so the risk here is not a dent — it is a crack. Tempered glass dislikes point pressure near an edge, and a C-clamp is precisely a point-pressure device applied to an edge. Over-tighten it and glass doesn’t give you a gentle warning dent; it can fail suddenly and shatter. That is why glass desks designed to carry an arm usually hand you a specific answer: a reinforced mounting zone, a thick rubber pad that spreads the clamp’s load, or a pre-set point built for it. The rule on glass is simple and non-negotiable — mount only where the maker says you can, use the padding they supply, and stop tightening the instant it is secure. Thin, hollow-core, and particleboard tops: dents, sag, and pull-through
The top most likely to cause trouble is the cheap one, and for structural reasons rather than cosmetic ones. A thin top, a hollow-core door-style top, or a low-density particleboard top has less material for a mount to grip and less strength to resist a load, so three things can go wrong. It can dent under the clamp more readily than a solid top. It can bow or sag over time where a loaded arm pulls on it, especially at full extension with a heavy display. None of that means a budget desk can’t take an arm — plenty do — but it means you check first. Press on the top where the mount will sit: if it flexes, treat that as a warning. Favour a grommet that feeds the load through the full thickness over a clamp that pinches a weak edge, and make sure any hole lands in solid material rather than a hollow void. The load doesn’t stop at install
Damage isn’t only a first-day event. An arm holds a mass out over the desk for years, and on a marginal top that steady, leveraged load is what eventually produces a sag or a creeping mark rather than a sudden one. How to prevent nearly all of it
Almost every case above comes down to the same short routine. Do these and an arm leaves a desk exactly as it found it:
- Use the supplied clamp pad, and spread the load. Never let bare metal meet the surface; back a thin pad with felt, cork, or a flat offcut so the bite is shared over a wider area.
- Consider a grommet on a soft top.If your top is soft, veneered, or you’re running a heavy display, a grommet feeds the load through the whole thickness instead of pinching an edge — provided the desk is yours to drill or already has a hole.
- Check thickness and solidity first.Measure the edge against the arm’s published range, and press-test the top where the mount will sit. A flexing or hollow spot rules out that location.
- Don’t over-tighten. Firm, not gorilla-tight. Extra torque adds no meaningful hold and is exactly what dents an edge or cracks glass.
- On glass, obey the maker.Mount only at the designated spot, use its padding, and stop the moment it’s secure.

Protecting a desk from an arm is part of the same habit that protects it from everything else, so it’s worth folding into your general desk care rather than treating as a one-off.
