Monitor arm vs monitor stand
Both claim to fix the same problem — the screen sits too low. They are not the same device wearing two price tags. One is a platform you set a monitor on. The other is a mechanism that holds it and lets it travel. Here is what each actually gets you, sourced from a real arm's spec sheet and a real riser's.

A monitor stand and a monitor arm both claim to fix the same complaint — the screen sits too low — and that is roughly where the resemblance ends. A stand is a block or platform you set the monitor on top of. An arm is a sprung or clamped mechanism that holds the monitor up and lets it travel. They are not two price points on the same object. They are two different tools for two different sizes of the same problem.
The verdict, before the spec-by-spec: a stand is cheaper, needs nothing bolted to your monitor or your desk, and buys you a fixed few inches. The riser we checked adjusts across a 4.5″–6.5″ window — two inches of real travel, not a range built to fit a body — and a large share of stands on the market have no adjustment at all. An arm needs a VESA-compatible monitor and a compatible desk edge, costs meaningfully more, and in exchange gives you an actual range — 13″ on the arm we checked — plus the ability to pull the screen forward, push it back, or swing it aside entirely.
So the honest question is not “which is better”. It is: how far off is your monitor right now, and does it need to keep moving once you get it there?If it’s low by an inch or two and it will sit in one spot forever, a stand closes that gap for a fraction of an arm’s cost and asks nothing of your monitor’s mounting holes. If it’s low by more than a stand’s own range can cover — or you sit-stand, share the desk, or simply recline in the afternoon — no stand fixes that. Only an arm has both the range and the VESA connection to actually get there, and to keep getting there as your posture changes.
Height adjustability and range
This is the number that decides everything else, so start here.
We checked VIVO’s 12″ Aluminum Monitor Riser (STAND-V000S), a representative example of the plain platform-riser category. Its own spec sheet gives a “Height Adjustment Range: 4.5″ to 6.5″”on a spring-loaded platform — two inches of travel, from a 4.5″ floor. That is the entire adjustment on offer. It is not nothing, but it is a range built to nudge a monitor that is already close, not a range built to fit whoever happens to be sitting at the desk. And two inches is generous by the category’s standards: plenty of stands sold as “monitor risers” are a single rigid height with no moving parts at all — you get the one number it was built to and nothing else.
Set that against an arm. Ergotron’s LX Desk Monitor Arm publishes a “13″ vertical adjustment range”. That is not a rounding difference from the riser’s two inches — it is roughly six times the travel, and it is travel the arm can use every day, not just dial in once at setup. Sit down, stand up, swap chairs, hand the desk to a coworker a foot taller or shorter: the arm follows along. The riser is set once, by hand, and while its adjustment is real, it is an occasional adjustment — something you do at setup, not something that moves with you through the day.
Does it reach OSHA’s eye-level target?
OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool states plainly: “The top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level.”Neither device is specified by its manufacturer against that target. The 4.5–6.5″ window and the 13″ range are both measured from the desk or the clamp, not from your eyes — whether either one actually lands the screen where OSHA describes depends entirely on how far off you start, which is a fact about your desk, your chair, and your own seated eye height, not about the product on the shelf.
Which is why the sizeof the range matters more than the range itself. If your monitor sits two inches low, the riser’s own 4.5–6.5″ window can plausibly close that gap in one adjustment. If it sits five or six inches low — not an unusual outcome once a monitor’s own low-slung factory stand meets a desk that was never the right height for you — a two-inch riser range cannot close it no matter how you set it, while the arm’s 13″ almost certainly can. Desk space and depth
Height is not the only geometry in play. OSHA’s guidance also gives a distance: “the preferred viewing distance is between 20 and 40 inches (50 and 100 cm) from the eye to the front surface of the computer screen.” A stand barely touches that number — the monitor sits on the riser roughly where its own base sat on the desk, so front-to-back distance changes little if at all.
An arm can move that distance a lot, in either direction, and that is a real cost as often as it is a benefit. Ergotron’s LX clamps to the desk’s back edge and reaches forward from there, so a monitor already near the far end of OSHA’s 40″ band can get pushed closer than it should be once the arm extends toward you — or, folded back on a shallow desk, sit further from you than expected. The clamp itself needs room too: it “attaches to surface edge .4″ to 2.4″ (10 to 60 mm) thick”, or, on desks without an exposed edge to grip, a grommet mount that “attaches through surface holes .31″ to 2″ (8 to 50 mm) wide and up to 3″ (76 mm) thick” — both of which assume a desk edge or a drilled hole that a flat-topped riser never has to ask about.
The VESA requirement
This is the one that ends the comparison outright for some monitors, regardless of budget.
An arm bolts to the monitor through the standardized screw holes on its back — Ergotron’s LX is published as “VESA FDMI MIS-D, 100/75, C (hole pattern: 100 x 100 mm & 75 x 75 mm)”. A riser asks none of that. The monitor rests on the platform on its own factory base, the same way it rested on the desk, so a monitor with no VESA holes at all — some ultrawides, most all-in-ones, the occasional budget panel — is still a candidate for a stand when it is not a candidate for an arm at any price.
Weight limits
The two devices carry weight in completely different ways, which changes what “weight limit” even means for each.
Ergotron’s LX is a counterbalanced arm — a spring pushes up against the monitor’s pull down — and it publishes a range with a floor as well as a ceiling: “7 to 25 lbs (3.2 to 11.3 kg)”, with the usable range shrinking once a monitor passes 20 lb. Too light and the spring wins, and the screen drifts upward on its own; too heavy and the monitor wins, and the arm sags no matter how far you tighten the adjustment. VIVO’s riser has no spring to satisfy, so it has no floor — only a ceiling: “Weight Capacity: 33 lbs”on a platform the same listing gives as 12″ by 8″, over a 9″ by 7″ base. That number describes whatever you set on top of it — monitor, factory base, and all — since nothing bolts through the monitor’s own VESA holes to isolate the panel’s weight alone. A three-pound monitor and a thirty-pound one both just sit there; neither one is too light for a platform to hold up, because a platform is not pushing back against anything.
Cost bracket
We do not print prices on this site — they move by the week and by the retailer — but the brackets are worth naming plainly, because they are not close.
A platform riser like the one above sits at the cheap end of the entire desk-accessory category: a slab of aluminum or wood, at most a couple of springs, no engineered mechanism to warrant. A counterbalanced arm sits well above it — you are paying for a mechanism that has to sense a specific weight and push back against it precisely, plus the VESA hardware, plus, on the better ones, a decade-long warranty standing behind the spring. A non-counterbalanced clamp arm sits somewhere between the two. Permanence
A stand asks nothing of your desk. Set it down, put the monitor on top, and you are done; pick it back up and move it to another desk in the time it takes to unplug two cables. Nothing is drilled, clamped, or left behind.
An arm is closer to a fixture than an accessory. The clamp bites onto the desk’s back edge and can, over time, mark a soft-edged desk; the grommet alternative is a literal hole through the work surface, which is not something you undo by picking the arm back up. Both mounting styles also assume specific desk geometry — the “.4″ to 2.4″” clamp window and the “.31″ to 2″” grommet window above are not universal, and a desk outside either one cannot take that arm no matter how well the monitor and its weight line up.
Choose an arm if…
- Your monitor is VESA-compatible and you have actually confirmed the hole pattern, not guessed it from the screen size.
- Your desk edge — or a spot you are willing to drill — fits the clamp or grommet window above.
- The screen needs to move through the day: sit-stand, a shared desk, or a posture that changes and takes your eye line with it.
- Your monitor sits low enough that a couple of inches of riser travel would not close the gap anyway.
Choose a stand if…
- Your monitor has no VESA holes at all, or you would rather not find out.
- The screen lives at one height, in one seat, for good.
- You are already within a couple of inches of correct and just need a small, fixed nudge.
- You want the option to move the whole setup to another desk later without leaving a mark on either one.
Either way, the decision is worth making from your own measurements rather than the category’s reputation. Measure how far off your monitor actually sits — against the eye-level target OSHA actually publishes — before you buy the fix for it.
Common questions
Which is better, a monitor arm or a monitor stand?
Neither, in the abstract — it depends on how far off your monitor sits and whether it needs to move once it gets there. A stand closes a small, fixed gap for less money and no VESA mount. An arm closes a large gap and keeps closing it as your posture changes through the day, for more money and a monitor with VESA holes. The honest way to choose is to measure your own gap first, not to pick a category reputation.
How many inches will a monitor stand actually raise my screen?
It varies by model, and by a lot. The riser we checked publishes a “Height Adjustment Range: 4.5″ to 6.5″”— two inches of adjustment on top of a 4.5″ base lift. Plenty of stands on the market have no adjustment at all: one fixed height, full stop. Compare that to an arm like Ergotron’s LX, which publishes a “13″ vertical adjustment range” — roughly six times the travel, and travel you can use every day rather than set once.
Do monitor stands require VESA mounting?
A platform riser — the kind this page compares against an arm — does not. The monitor rests on the platform on its own base, exactly as it rested on the desk, so a monitor with no VESA holes at all is still a candidate for a stand. Will a monitor arm or stand fix my neck pain?
We are not going to answer that, because it is a medical question and nobody writing this site is a clinician. What we can report is geometry: OSHA’s Computer Workstations eTool states that “the top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level”, and either device can help you reach that position if the numbers line up. Whether reaching that position resolves pain you already have is a question for a clinician, not a monitor-accessory review.
Can a desk clamp or grommet mount damage my desk?
It is a real possibility worth weighing, which is part of why we call an arm semi-permanent rather than portable. Ergotron’s LX specifies a desk clamp that “attaches to surface edge .4″ to 2.4″ (10 to 60 mm) thick”, which can mark a soft-edged desk over time, or a grommet mount that “attaches through surface holes .31″ to 2″ (8 to 50 mm) wide and up to 3″ (76 mm) thick” — a literal hole through the work surface. My monitor is too light for a counterbalanced arm — should I get a stand instead?
That is one of the more common reasons to. A counterbalanced arm has a published minimum weight as well as a maximum — Ergotron’s LX is rated “7 to 25 lbs (3.2 to 11.3 kg)” — and a monitor under that floor can make the arm float upward on its own.
