Can a monitor arm hold a laptop?
The short answer is yes, but not the way people picture it. A laptop has nowhere for the arm to bolt to, so the honest question is whether a tray earns its place over a plain stand.

The question sounds like it should have a one-word answer, and it almost does: yes, a monitor arm can hold a laptop. But the way most people picture it — the laptop clamped straight onto the end of the arm — is not how it works, and the gap between the picture and the reality is the whole of this page. A monitor arm is built to grab a monitor, and a laptop is not a monitor. What bridges them is a tray, and whether that tray is worth buying depends entirely on what you are actually trying to do.

Why an arm cannot grab a laptop directly

On a desk you meet it in two sizes: the 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm square patterns, both fastened with M4 screws. A laptop speaks none of it. The lid of a laptop is a screen with no threaded holes on the back, no VESA pattern, nothing for an arm’s plate to bolt to. So an arm cannot hold a laptop for the same reason a wall bracket cannot hold a picture with no hook on it: the mount and the object were never designed to meet. This is not a quality problem you can buy your way past with a better arm. It is a shape problem, and it needs an adapter.
What a VESA laptop tray actually does
The adapter is a VESA laptop tray(sometimes sold as a laptop holder or notebook mount). It is a small shelf, or a pair of adjustable clamps, that cradles the laptop by its base — and on its own back it carries a standard VESA plate. You bolt the tray to the arm through that plate, exactly as you would a monitor, and then rest or clamp the laptop into the tray. The chain is simple: arm holds tray, tray holds laptop.
A good tray has a lip or strap so the laptop cannot slide off when the arm is tilted, and it leaves the vents clear so the machine does not cook. A cheap one blocks airflow, hides ports you need, or grips so loosely that a nudge sends the laptop travelling. The tray is doing real structural work, so it is not the place to save the last few dollars — a laptop that falls off a raised arm has a long way to go.
The weight trap: a laptop can be too light
Here is the part that surprises people. The usual worry with a monitor arm is that the screen is too heavy. With a laptop the risk runs the other way: it can be too light. A gas-spring arm is a counterbalanced spring, and it is tuned to hold a weight inside a range— there is a minimum as well as a maximum. Load it under the minimum and the spring wins: the arm drifts upward on its own and will not hold the height you set.
A bare laptop is light, and on a tray it can land at or below the bottom of many arms’ ranges. Two things help. The tray itself adds weight, pushing the total up into the usable band. And some arms let you dial the spring tension down far enough to hold a light load. The ergonomic catch: you still cannot type on it
Say you have mounted the laptop and it holds its height. You have solved one problem and created another. Raising the screen to a good height — OSHA puts the sweet spot at “the preferred viewing distance…between 20 and 40 inches (50 and 100 cm)” with “the top of the monitor…at or slightly below eye level” — lifts the built-in keyboard up with it. And a keyboard at eye-line height is useless: your hands would be somewhere around your chin.
OSHA’s neutral posture wants your “hands, wrists, and forearms…straight, in-line and roughly parallel to the floor” with “elbows…bent between 90 and 120 degrees.” A laptop forces a single fixed relationship between screen and keyboard, so you can put the screen right orthe keyboard right, never both. Arm or stand? The honest comparison
Once you have accepted the external keyboard, the real fork appears, and for a laptop on its own the answer is usually not an arm at all. A laptop standraises the screen to the same height, costs far less, needs no VESA tray, and sits rock-steady because it is a passive wedge with nothing to drift. So when does the arm win? When the laptop needs to move. If you want to swing the laptop out over the desk for a moment and push it back, float it aside to clear the surface, or share the screen with someone across the desk, an arm gives you motion a stand cannot. The number to respect is the combined load. A monitor, a laptop, and a tray can add up quickly, and on a dual mount each arm carries its own rated limit rather than sharing one big allowance. The honest cons of mounting a laptop
Before you commit, the drawbacks, plainly. A tray is an extra purchase that a stand does not need, and a bad one blocks vents or ports. A light laptop can sit under an arm’s minimum and float. You lose a little of the laptop’s whole point — grabbing it and walking away — because it is now clamped into a tray you have to unclip. And clamshell users who close the lid and run an external monitor may not want the laptop visible at all, in which case a simple vertical dock and a monitor on the arm is tidier than a tray. A tray is a real solution to a real layout; it is just not the default, and it is worth knowing what it costs you.
So: can a monitor arm hold a laptop?
Yes — through a VESA tray, because the laptop has no holes of its own, and only if the arm’s weight range reaches down far enough to hold something that light without drifting.
