Is blue light bad for your eyes?

Few home-office products are sold as hard as blue-light glasses, and few rest on shakier ground. The pitch is that screens emit blue light, blue light damages your eyes, and a special coated lens protects them. It is a tidy story that turns a vague worry into a checkout. The problem is that the first link in the chain — that screen blue light damages your eyes — is not something the eye physicians actually believe.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology, the largest association of eye physicians and surgeons, states it about as plainly as a professional body ever states anything: “there is no scientific evidence that blue light from digital devices causes damage to your eye.” That is the whole ballgame for the “is it bad for your eyes” question, and it is worth sitting with before we get into the nuance, because the nuance does not rescue the product. Your eyes can feel terrible after a screen day and none of it be blue-light damage.

So why do your eyes actually hurt?

Because tired, gritty, aching eyes after a long screen day are real, and the AAO does not pretend otherwise. It just points at a different cause: “Most of us blink less when looking at screens, causing eye strain and dry eyes.” Concentration suppresses the blink reflex — you blink markedly less while staring at a panel than while talking or reading on paper — and each skipped blink is a moment the tear film across the front of your eye is not being refreshed. Do that for an afternoon and the surface dries out and complains.

Stack the usual environmental causes on top — glare bouncing off the glass, a screen dragged in too close, a monitor set too low so your gaze and neck drop to it, a dim room fighting a bright panel, dry conditioned air — and you have a full account of screen eye strain that never once mentions the colour of the light. Blue-light glasses: what the evidence supports

Given all that, do the glasses do anything? The most honest answer is: probably very little for eye strain, on current evidence. The AAO “does not recommend any special blue light-blocking eyewear for computer use” — which, from the body that would know, is close to a verdict on its own.

And when researchers pooled the trials, they landed in the same place. A 2023 Cochrane systematic review — Cochrane reviews are the careful, aggregate-the-studies kind — concluded that “blue-light filtering spectacle lenses may not attenuate symptoms of eye strain with computer use, over a short-term follow-up period.” Read that carefully, because we do not want to overclaim in the other direction: it is a cautious “may not,” from short-term evidence, not a hard proof that the lenses are inert. But “the pooled evidence suggests they may not reduce your eye strain” is a very different thing from the confidence with which they are marketed. When the professional body declines to recommend them and the systematic review finds no clear benefit, the weight is firmly on the skeptical side.

There is a genuine product nearby that gets confused with these, and the AAO is careful to separate them: “computer glasses for reducing eye strain are not the same as ‘blue light blocking’ glasses.” Computer glasses are typically a prescription tuned to your screen’s distance — a real intervention an optometrist can prescribe if focusing at that range is hard for you. That is an eye exam, not an impulse buy, and it is worth keeping distinct from the coating that gets bundled onto lenses at the till.

The sleep question is real — and it is a different question

Here is where we have to be precise, because this is the one blue-light claim with solid ground under it, and the marketing smuggles it in to prop up the eye-damage one. Light late in the evening — blue-rich light especially — can nudge your body clock and make sleep harder to reach. The AAO says as much: “too much blue light exposure late at night from your phone, tablet or computer can make it harder to get to sleep.”

Notice what that claim is and is not. It is about timing— light at the wrong hour interfering with sleep — and it is about your body clock, not your eyes taking damage. “Late-night screens can disturb sleep” and “screen light harms your eyes” are two entirely separate statements, and only the first has good support. Blurring them into a single “blue light is bad” is exactly the move that sells glasses.

The honest response to the sleep point also is not glasses. It is timing and intensity: fewer bright screens right before bed, night-shift and warm-mode settings that most phones and operating systems now ship, and dimmer, warmer light in the room as the evening goes on. That last part overlaps with a question we treat on its own terms — color temperature for a home office — where warm-versus-cool light is a real decision. If you scroll in bed, the useful change is when and how bright, not what is coated onto your lenses.

The honest bottom line

Put it together and the picture is clearer than the aisle makes it look. On the evidence we have, screen blue light is not damaging your eyes; the eye physicians say there is no scientific evidence that it does. Blue-light glasses have weak support for the thing they are sold to fix — the AAO does not recommend them, and the pooled trials do not find a clear eye-strain benefit. The tired eyes you actually feel come from blinking less, glare, and where and how close your screen sits, all of which are fixable without spending anything. And the one real blue-light effect — on sleep — is about timing, and its fix is timing too.

If you already own a pair of blue-light glasses and like them, nothing here says throw them out; a lens you like is a lens you like. What we are pushing back on is buying them to prevent eye damage that the evidence does not support, or in place of the free fixes that the evidence does. Spend the attention on the behavioral and positional fixes first. They are cheaper and better backed.
