Desk lamp vs overhead lighting

A ceiling light and a task lamp do two different jobs. Good lighting is layered, not a contest: ambient light for the room and a focused task light for the desk. Here is what each does well, where each falls short, and how to run both without lighting up your screen.

What overhead lighting does well, and where it stops

Overhead lighting — a ceiling fixture, recessed cans, a flush mount, a pendant — is the workhorse of a room. Its strength is coverage: one or two fixtures wash the whole space with a reasonably even level of light, so there are no dark corners, the room reads as bright and open, and you can walk in, find things, and sit down without groping for a switch on the desk. The honest verdict: layer them, do not choose

The straight answer to "desk lamp or overhead lighting" is: both, doing their own jobs. Run the overhead as the ambient layer so the room is evenly and comfortably lit and your eyes have a bright, consistent background, and add a desk lamp as the task layer to fill the shadows and put controllable, aimed light on the work. A lone overhead throws hard shadows: with light coming from one direction high above, everything below casts a defined shadow, and at a desk that means your hands and head shade the work. A lone desk lamp does the opposite and creates a hard edge of light — a bright pool with darkness just beyond it — so every time your gaze leaves the lit zone it crosses a sharp contrast boundary.
