Are monitor lights worth it?
The honest answer is: for one specific situation, yes, and it is cheap to fix. For another situation that looks identical from the outside, no — and the fix there is free. Here is how to tell which one you are in before you spend anything.

“Are monitor lights worth it?” is a fair question to ask before spending real money on what is, physically, a strip of LEDs. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on your desk — specifically on one thing about your desk you can check in ten seconds and for free. Get that check right and a monitor light is one of the better small upgrades you can make. Get it wrong and you have paid for a fix to a problem you did not have.
This page is the verdict. It is not the mechanism explainer and it is not the ranked roundup — both of those are here if you want them. This is the part before either: is the category worth your money at all, and if so, which corner of it.
First, what “monitor lights” even means
The phrase covers three different products that people lump together, and the “worth it” answer is different for each:
Monitor light bars(also called screen bars) clamp to the top of your monitor and aim a strip of light down and forward onto the desk in front of the screen — deliberately not onto the panel itself. They are the thing most people mean by “monitor light,” and they are the right answer for most desks that have the problem.
Bias lighting is a much cheaper strip that goes behindthe screen and lifts the brightness of the wall it sits against. It does not light the desk at all — it exists purely to soften the contrast between a glowing panel and a dark wall. It is the budget entry into the same problem.
A desk lamp is the general-purpose option: it lights the whole surface, so it is the better buy if you still work with paper, take video calls, or want the desk usable with the screen off. The lamps that publish real specs are a small field, but they solve a broader job than a bar does.
All three are, at bottom, answers to the same question — and whether any of them is worth buying comes down to whether you actually have that question.
The one situation where they are clearly worth it
There is a single, common scenario a monitor light is genuinely built for: a bright screen in a dim surround. Working after dark with the overhead off. A basement or north-facing room. A monitor turned up to cut through daytime glare, still running at that brightness in the evening. In all of these, your screen is a lit rectangle floating in a darker room, and your eyes are working across that boundary all day.
This is not a marketing invention. OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance says it directly: “high contrast between light and dark areas of the computer screen, horizontal work surface, and surrounding areas can cause eye fatigue and headaches.” The problem is the gapbetween the bright thing and the dark thing — not the screen alone, not the room alone. A monitor light closes that gap by raising the light level around the screen without putting glare on it. If that description matches your desk in the evening, the product has a real job, and for the price it does it cheaply.
The ten-second test to run before you buy
Do not buy on the theory. Test for the problem, because the test is free and takes less time than reading a spec sheet.
Wait until it is dark outside. Sit at your desk with your normal room lighting on and your monitor at its normal brightness. Look at the strip of desk directly in front of the screen, then look at the screen itself.
If the desk is obviously, uncomfortably darker than the panel — if the screen reads as a glowing thing hovering in a dim space — you have the contrast gap, and a monitor light is worth it for you. If the desk looks basically fine and evenly lit next to the screen, you do not have the problem, and no spec sheet is going to give you a reason to spend. That is the whole test, and it is more reliable than any lux figure on any box.
Where they are not worth it — and the fix is free
The most useful thing this page can tell you is when to keep your money. A monitor light is a poor buy in three cases:
Your room is already well lit.If you work in daylight or with an overhead or lamp already on, the contrast gap is already small, and there is little for the light to close. CCOHS is refreshingly blunt that even its general 300–500 lux office figure “is not a must” — it applies where no task lamp is in use. Flipping on a light you already own is the same fix as a bar, for nothing.
You are chasing a lux number, not comfort.OSHA suggests 20–50 foot-candles for office work and up to 73 where LCDs are in use; CCOHS puts computer-task light lower still. These do not agree, because the monitor is itself a light source and the real question was never “how many lux” but “does the desk brightness match the screen’s.” If your desk already feels balanced, a brighter number on a box will not make it feel better.
Your discomfort is actually glare.If a window or an overhead is reflecting off your panel, more light is the wrong tool — OSHA notes that reflected light on the monitor “make images more difficult to see, resulting in eye strain and fatigue.” The fix there is angling the screen and controlling the window, which we cover in how to reduce screen glare. Telling you not to buy is not a rhetorical move here. If the free light switch fixes your desk, that is the recommendation, and the honest one.
What the money actually buys
Say the test came back positive and you want one. The next fair question is how much to spend, because monitor light bars span roughly an order of magnitude in price and the top of that range is a lot of money for a strip of LEDs.
Here is the part the marketing buries: across that range, the premium is mostly notbuying more light on your desk. The extra money goes to a rear backlight that glows behind the monitor, to nicer controls — a wireless dial instead of touch buttons — and, at the top, to published specifications you can actually verify. Two bars from the same brand can put the same amount of light in front of you while one costs considerably more, because the difference is the backlight and the puck, not the beam.
Further down the range, what you trade away is documentation rather than output: color-rendering figures that do not name a method, rated-life claims with no standard behind them, lux numbers quoted with no measuring distance (which makes them numbers, not specifications). A cheaper bar can absolutely close your contrast gap. What it often cannot do is let you check what you bought. Cheaper things that solve the same problem
Before you buy anything, three of these cost less than a bar and close the same gap:
The light you already own. An overhead or an existing lamp, switched on in the evening, raises the surround brightness for free. It is the first thing to try and it is the reason the ten-second test matters.
Bias lighting. If your specific complaint is the dark-wall-behind-a-bright-screen feeling and you do not need light to work by, a bias-lighting stripis the lowest-cost dedicated fix — it lifts the wall behind the panel and nothing else.
A well-placed desk lamp.If you already own a lamp, moving it beside you rather than behind the screen may be the entire solution — and if you buy one, it does the bar’s job plus lights the paper and your hands. The trap is aiming it at the monitor; the rule from CCOHS is to light the document, not the screen.
The three-year question
“Worth it” is not only about tonight; it is about whether the thing is still doing its job in three years, which is the lens this whole site is built around. A monitor light is a small purchase, but it lives switched on for hours a day, and the failure modes are real: a cheap driver that starts to flicker, an LED that shifts color or dims early, a clamp that loosens on the bezel.

A monitor light is worth itif your screen sits bright in a dim surround, you spend real hours there, and the ten-second dark test makes the contrast gap obvious. In that case it is a cheap fix for a real discomfort, and a mid-priced bar — or a couple of dollars of bias lighting if you only need the contrast side — is money well spent.
It is not worth it if your room is already evenly lit, if the desk already looks balanced next to the screen, or if your real problem is glare rather than darkness. In those cases the fix is a light switch, a screen angle, or a lamp you already own, and the honest recommendation is to keep the money.

Are monitor light bars worth the money?
For a bright screen in a dim room — the classic evening-work setup — yes, and it is one of the cheaper desk upgrades that changes how the desk feels. Is a monitor light bar or bias lighting better value?
They fix the same contrast problem from opposite sides, and bias lighting is usually the cheaper entry. A bar lights the desk in front of the screen; bias lighting lifts the wall behind it. If your discomfort is the glowing-rectangle-in-a-dark-room feeling and you do not need more light to work by, a strip of bias lighting is the lowest-cost fix. Can't I just use a normal desk lamp instead?
Often, yes — and if you still handle paper or take video calls, a lamp is the better buy because it lights the whole surface, not just the strip in front of the screen. I already have a bright room. Do I need a monitor light?
Probably not. The whole value of a monitor light is closing the gap between a bright screen and a dark surround. If your surround is already bright — daylight from a window, a lamp already on, an overhead you can switch on — the gap is small and there is little for the product to do.
