How to position a monitor light bar

Step two: aim the head down, onto the desk, not your eyes
With the bar seated, tilt the head so the light falls on the desk and keyboard in front of you. The target is the working area between the base of the monitor and the front edge of the desk — where your hands, your keyboard, and any paper you are reading actually live. Two directions are off-limits, and both matter:

- Not back into your eyes. If you can see the lit strip or its bright edge directly while sitting normally, it is aimed too high or too far back, and a light source in your direct line of sight is its own kind of glare. You want to see the effect of the light on the desk, not the source of it.
The quick test for this step is to sit down properly, put your hands on the keyboard, and look where the brightest part of the pool lands. It should be on the desk in front of you, fading gently, with the keyboard clearly lit and the screen untouched. Step three: balance brightness and color with the screen and room

Step four: check for reflections, then route the cable
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that catches the last bit of glare. Sit down in your normal working position — real seat height, real distance, real posture — and look at the screen with the bar on and the room lit the way it usually is. You are hunting for a bright streak, a hotspot, or a washed-out band on the panel that is the bar reflecting back at you. The honest limits: task light, not room light
Two caveats keep a light bar honest, and both come straight from how CCOHS frames lighting. First, a light bar is task lighting, not room lighting. Most badly positioned light bars fail in one of a handful of predictable ways. Run down this list if yours does not feel right:
- Aiming it at the screen. The single biggest error, and the one that turns the bar into a glare source instead of a glare fix. The throw belongs on the desk, never on the panel.
- Checking the aim while standing. Reflections depend on your eye position, so a bar tuned standing up can glare the moment you sit down. Always aim and check from your working seat.
- Running it too bright. A strip far brighter than the room forces your eyes to keep readjusting and can put the source in your peripheral vision. Dim it until the desk and screen feel balanced.
