How much does a standing desk cost?
Almost all of it is the legs. The bracket you pay into buys leg stages, a motor or two, weight capacity, warranty years and the desktop material — and none of that is the cheapest way to find out whether you will actually stand.

Ask what a standing desk costs and the honest answer is a shrug and a range that spans an entire order of magnitude. Ask what makes one cost more than another and you get something you can actually use. So that is the question we are going to answer, and we are going to do it without a single dollar figure — partly because live prices move faster than any page can, and partly because the price is a symptom. The cause is a short list of specs, and once you can read them you can tell which bracket you belong in and which upgrade is someone else’s problem.
One thing up front, because it is the load-bearing honesty of the whole topic: the most expensive desk is not the cheapest way to find out whether you will stand. Hold that; we come back to it.
It is the legs. Almost all of it.
Strip a sit-stand desk down to what you are paying for and it is two motorized steel columns, the electronics that drive them, and a board on top. The board is the part everyone looks at and the least of what you are buying. The columns are the machine: they are what fails, what wobbles, what has a warranty, and what separates a cheap desk from an expensive one. Nearly every real difference in price traces back to them.
That reframes the shopping. You are not choosing a desk so much as choosing a lifting mechanism and then bolting a surface to it. Which is exactly why the bare-frame routeexists, and why it is so often the value play — but we will get there. First, the four things about the mechanism that actually move the price.
Leg stages: one, two or three
The single biggest driver, and the one least explained, is how many stageseach leg has. A stage is a telescoping segment. A single-stage leg has one moving section inside the outer housing; a two-stage leg has two nested sections; a three-stage leg has three. More stages is more engineering, more cost, and — this is the part that matters — a materially different range of motion from the same closed height.
Here is the geometry, described rather than guessed. With more segments to extend, a leg can reach a lower minimum height and a taller maximum without the closed column being any longer. So a three-stage desk typically gets lower to the floor and higher at the top than a single-stage one that looks the same when parked. It also tends to be faster, because the segments move together, and steadier at full height when it is well made, because more overlap between segments resists the leverage that a tall, extended column puts on any slack in the joints.
Why should you care about the floor specifically? Because for a lot of people it is the spec that decides whether the desk fits them sitting, and that is the half with real arithmetic behind it. Take the ANSUR II anthropometric survey’s median popliteal height and median seated elbow-rest height and add them — barefoot, seat at the back of the knee, elbows at 90°:
- Median male: about 26.6″
- Median female: about 24.4″
That addition is ours, not a published desk height, and ANSUR is a military population — younger and fitter than whoever is reading this. Take it as direction, not as your number.
The direction is unambiguous: both medians sit well under the roughly 29″ that a fixed desk lands at, and ANSI/HFES 100 — an ANSI-accredited national standard — puts a sit-only input surface’s adjustment range at 22–28.3″ and a sit/stand surface at 56–118 cm. If a cheaper single-stage desk bottoms out near 29″, it cannot reach the seated height most bodies actually need, no matter what you spend on the top. The extra stage is not a luxury there; it is the thing buying you a floor low enough to fit. If you are tall, invert the argument — the ceiling is your constraint, and the stages buy the top of the range instead. Either way, you are paying for the end of the range you are short of, not for both.
Motor count: one motor or two
The second driver is how many motors do the lifting. A single-motor desk runs both legs from one motor through a shared drive shaft. It is the cheaper arrangement, and it is usually slower and rated to carry less; under a load that sits mostly over one leg it can also bind or rack slightly, because one motor is dragging the far column up through the linkage.
A dual-motor desk puts a motor inside each leg. That typically raises the weight ceiling and the travel speed, and it lifts more evenly when the load is off-center — each column drives itself. This is the jump from the entry-level bracket into the mid-range, and for most people it is a defensible one if they load the desk with more than a laptop. If you run a light desk and rarely raise it, a single motor genuinely does the job; if you hang two big monitors off an arm on one side, the dual-motor lift is where the smoothness and the capacity both live. Weight capacity: the number people quietly over-buy
Capacity is the easiest spec to be sold on and one of the easiest to over-buy. The premium end advertises ceilings far beyond what a normal desk ever holds, and a big number feels reassuring. But capacity is engineering you pay for whether or not you use it, and most desks live their whole lives at a fraction of their rating.
The move is not to ignore the number — it is to earn it. Go read the actual weight off your monitors’ spec sheets, add the arm or stand that holds them, your keyboard, a laptop, and whatever heavy object has colonized the corner of your desk. That total is your real load, and we are not going to estimate it for you because guessing is exactly the failure this site exists to avoid. Compare it to the frame’s rating with headroom to spare, and buy the capacity your load needs rather than the capacity that makes the best headline. A frame working near its limit is also, not coincidentally, a frame more inclined to flex — which is the honest bridge to the spec nobody prints on the box.
Warranty years: the longevity bracket, and the third number
Everywhere else on this site, the third spec we quote for anything is the longevity number — the warranty years, the cycle rating, the hours. A sit-stand desk is no exception, and the warranty is one of the clearest signals of which bracket you are looking at. It runs from a few years at the entry level to a decade or more, up to lifetime cover at the top. A longer warranty is partly the maker’s confidence in the columns and partly a cost they have priced in, and you are paying for both.
Two things worth separating, though, because they get blurred. A warranty is a promisefrom the manufacturer — only ever as good as the company standing behind it. Independent testingis a different thing. BIFMA, the furniture trade body, maintains the durability and stability test standards a desk can be tested against; a frame that has passed one has cleared a defined set of load, cycle and stability tests. That is a floor, not a quality score, and it is not the same as a warranty length — but when a maker publishes both a long warranty and a named standard it was tested to, you are looking at a stronger longevity case than a big number alone. When they publish neither, the longevity claim is just a number, and the honest entry for a number nobody stands behind is to treat it as unverified.
The desktop: where premium hides in plain sight
Now the part everyone actually looks at, and the one that matters least to the machine. The desktop drives a real slice of the price and almost none of the ergonomics. An entry or mid-range desk usually wears a laminate over MDF or particleboard; the premium bracket is where solid hardwood, bamboo, thicker slabs and finished edges live, and those materials carry a lot of the sticker gap and a lot of the weight.
The reason this is aesthetics and durability rather than ergonomics comes straight from OSHA, which prescribes nodesk height at all — its desks guidance is about clearance, roughly 20–28″ of room underneath for your thighs, knees and toes. The surface itself just has to be flat, deep enough, and out of the way of your legs. A solid walnut top does that no better than a laminate one; it does it more handsomely and, arguably, for longer. Both are legitimate reasons to pay. Neither is an ergonomic one, and it is worth knowing which you are buying.
Which is the whole argument for the value build. Because the desktop is detachable from the machine, you can buy just the frameat the bracket your stages, motors and capacity actually require, and then supply your own top — a butcher block, a solid-core door, a slab you already own. You get the engineering you need and skip the marked-up surface you do not. One caveat that is pure geometry: a thick top raises the finished floor height, so if a low floor is the reason you paid for the stages, keep your own top thin enough not to give it back.
The cheapest way to find out whether you will stand
Here is the promise from the top of the page, paid off. The most expensive desk is the worst way to answer the one question that decides whether any of this was worth it: will you actually use the standing half?
There is real evidence you should ask. The Cochrane review of sit-stand desks found they cut sitting by about 100 minutes a workday in the short term, but only about 57 minutesat medium-term follow-up — the effect roughly halves as the novelty fades, the evidence is low-quality, and the broader health benefits it looked for came back unproven (no harms were reported either). So the risk of buying a premium desk for the standing is not that it will fail to lift. It is that in eighteen months it is an expensive desk you never raise.
Two cheaper ways to de-risk that. A convertersits on the desk you already own for a fraction of a full desk’s cost and answers the question with your own behavior before you commit a cent to a frame. Reading the brackets honestly
Put the drivers together and the price tiers stop being mysterious. Roughly, and without pretending the lines are hard:
- Entry-level. A single-stage or basic two-stage leg, a single motor, a modest weight ceiling, a higher floor, a laminate top and a warranty measured in a few years. Genuinely fine if the desk descends far enough to fit you sitting and you are honest that you will change position rather than stand all day.
- Mid-range.A two-stage dual-motor frame — a lower floor, more capacity, faster and more even travel, a longer warranty, and usually the option of a bamboo or nicer laminate top. This is the bracket most people who know they will use the desk actually want.
- Premium. Three-stage dual-motor legs for the lowest floor and the tallest ceiling, the highest capacity, the longest or lifetime warranty, solid or specialty tops, and, on the better makers, a published standard the frame was tested to.
The upgrade worth paying for is the one that fixes a constraint you actually have — you are short and need a low floor, you are tall and need a high ceiling, your gear is heavy, you want the surface to outlast the room. The upgrade to refuse is the one you are buying because the number is bigger. What we can and cannot tell you
We have not tested any of these desks. Everything above is read off spec sheets and standards documents and reasoned from geometry, and cited so you can check it. What a spec sheet cannot tell you is how steady a particular desk feels at full extension, whether a motor still runs quiet after two years, or whether a given joint develops a rattle — those are build-quality questions that need hands and time, and owner reviews will serve you better than we can. Common questions
Why are standing desks so much more expensive than a normal desk?
Because you are buying a machine, not a board on legs. A fixed desk is a surface and four legs; a sit-stand desk adds two telescoping steel columns, one or two motors, a controller and the electronics that drive them. That mechanism is where almost all of the extra money goes — the tabletop on a mid-range electric desk is often the same laminate you would find on a fixed desk. If the lifting mechanism is the value, the honest question is not “how cheap can I get a standing desk” but “which part of the mechanism do I actually need?” That is what the brackets on this page try to answer.
Are the cheap entry-level standing desks any good?
They can be, for the right person. An entry-level frame — often a single-stage or basic two-stage leg with a single motor — lifts and lowers just like an expensive one; what it gives up is a low floor, a high ceiling, weight capacity, travel speed and warranty years. If it descends far enough to fit you sitting, and you know you will change position rather than stand rigidly, a cheap desk does the actual job. Single-stage, two-stage or three-stage legs — which do I need?
The number of stages is how many nested segments each leg telescopes through, and it decides two things you actually feel: how lowthe desk goes and how far it travels. More stages generally mean a lower minimum height and a taller maximum from the same closed leg, which is why they cost more. If you are on the shorter side, the floor is the spec that matters: ANSI/HFES 100 sets a sit-only surface range starting at 22″, and a desk whose lowest setting is near 29″ cannot get you there sitting. Do I really need a dual-motor desk?
Not always. A single-motor desk drives both legs off one motor through a shared shaft; it is cheaper, usually slower, and carries less. If your desk holds a laptop and one monitor and you rarely move it, a single motor is often enough. Is a converter or a bare frame the cheaper way into standing?
They answer different questions. A converter is the cheapest way to find out whether you will stand at all— it sits on the desk you already own for a fraction of a full desk’s cost, so you risk very little to learn your own habits. A bare frame plus your own top is the cheapest way to own a proper sit-stand desk once you know you will use it— you buy the engineering and skip the marked-up desktop by supplying your own. How much weight capacity do I actually need?
Less than the premium ceilings advertise, almost certainly — but do not guess. Go and read the weight off your monitors’ spec sheets, add whatever holds them up, your keyboard, and anything heavy that lives on the desk, then compare that total to the frame’s rating. Most desks never come close to their ceiling, so a very high capacity is often paying for engineering you will not use. But an arm-mounted pair of large monitors adds up faster than people expect, and a frame that is straining is a frame more likely to rack or wobble. Measure first, then buy the bracket your real load needs.
