How to set up a standing desk, in order
A sit-stand desk is really two desks that share a frame, and the first day sets both. Here is the order we would follow: build it and steady it, set a standing height and a separate seated height to your elbows, then deal with the monitor, the cables and the mat before you ever save a preset.

A sit-stand desk is two desks wearing one frame. There is a desk for standing and a desk for sitting, and they are not the same height — they are more than a foot apart. Almost every problem people have with a new standing desk comes from setting it up as though it were one desk with a button, rather than two heights that each have to be right on their own.
So the first day is an order-of-operations job, and the order is the whole point. This is the sit-stand-specific version. Here we are dealing only with the parts that a lifting desk adds: a second height, a monitor that moves when you do not want it to, cables that get dragged around, presets to save, and a rhythm that turns out to fade.
First: build it, then make it stop moving
Assemble the frame on its back on the floor, tighten everything in stages rather than fully torquing each bolt as you reach it, and stand it up only once every leg bracket is snug. The instructions that came in the box are the authority on your particular frame; we are not going to second-guess a torque sequence we cannot see.
What matters before you set a single height is that the desk is stable at full extension, because that is where a sit-stand desk is least stable and where you will spend the standing half of your day. Raise it all the way up and push it. A brand-new desk will usually have some play that comes straight out with a level floor and a second pass on the bolts — adjust the feet until the desk does not rock, and re-snug the frame fasteners after the first day, once the joints have settled under load.
Some sway, though, is the frame’s design rather than a loose bolt, and no amount of tightening changes that. The reason stability comes first is simple: every height you are about to set is measured while you lean on the surface, and you cannot measure against something that moves.
Set your standing height to your standing elbows
With the desk empty and stable, raise it to standing and set the height by your elbows, not by a number. OSHA’s keyboard guidance is the anchor, and it is the same rule you will use twice today: “Elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard and hang comfortably to the side of the body”, with the wrists kept straight and neutral.
So stand as you actually stand — shoes on if you wear them at the desk, weight even — and let your upper arms hang straight down with your forearms out at roughly 90°. Where your hands sit, unforced, is where the keyboard should sit. Raise or lower the surface to meet them rather than dropping or hunching your shoulders to meet the surface. If your keyboard sits on a tray or a deck below the desktop, set the surface so the keys land at your hands, not the desktop.
There is deliberately no target height here, and that is not a dodge. OSHA does not prescribe a desk height, because the right one depends entirely on your build. The elbow is the reference the standard actually gives you, and it is one you carry around with you. Note the reading off the desk’s display once it feels right — you will save it as a preset shortly.
Then set your seated height to your seated elbows
Now lower the desk to sitting and do the same thing again, from the chair this time. Set the chair first — feet flat on the floor or a footrest, thighs roughly parallel to the floor, in the neutral posture OSHA describes under good working positions— and only then bring the desk down to your seated elbows using the exact same 90° test. Your seated height will be well below your standing one, because your elbows are lower when you sit.
This is the step that a converter physically cannot do and a full sit-stand desk can, and it is worth being clear about why it matters. A fixed desk is usually around 29″, and that is above where most people’s seated elbows land. Lowering the surface to your seated elbows is the half of the standing-desk purchase with real tape-measure logic behind it — and it is invisible if you only ever set the standing height. Take both readings. The whole reason you bought a desk that descends is the descent.
One note on the arithmetic you will see quoted elsewhere: ANSI/HFES 100, a national standard, puts a sit/stand input surface across a 56–118 cmrange. That is the envelope the standard expects the desk to cover; your two personal heights sit somewhere inside it. It is not a height to copy — it is the span the mechanism is built to move through, which becomes the next problem.
The monitor does not ride up with the desk
Here is the trap that catches almost everyone, and it is pure geometry. If your monitor sits on the desktop, it goes up when the desk goes up — by exactly the same amount. But when you stand, your eyes go up by more than that, because your entire head rises off the chair. So a screen that was at eye level sitting down ends up below eye level standing up, on the setting you were most looking forward to using.
The way out is to stop the monitor from riding on the surface at all. Put it on a monitor armclamped to the desk (or a riser, if the height happens to work for both postures), so the screen holds its own position independent of the desktop under it. Then set that position once against OSHA’s published figures: the “top of the monitor…at or slightly below eye level”, the center “15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level”, and the screen “between 20 and 40 inches” from your eyes. The honest complication: an arm sets one height, and you have two eye lines. Most people set the arm for standing, where the geometry is least forgiving, and nudge it or accept a small compromise sitting. That is a real trade-off rather than a solved problem, and it is the reason the arm exists at all — a monitor bolted to the moving desktop cannot make that trade.
Leave slack in the cables before you ever press up
A standing desk drags everything plugged into it up and down a couple of dozen times a day, and cables are the thing most likely to fail that trip. By our conversion of the ANSI/HFES 100 range above, the surface can travel roughly 24″between its limits — and in practice most desks move something close to that. Every cord that leaves the desk for a wall outlet, a floor socket or a shelf therefore needs at least that much slack, or it goes taut at the top of the lift and either unplugs itself or pulls a power brick off the wall.
So before you tuck a single cable, feed the desk to its full height and see which cords come tight. The move is to gather the slack on the desk’s underside — a tray or a channel that rises and falls withthe surface — and to leave a service loop where the cable finally drops to the floor, so the loop opens and closes as the desk moves instead of yanking at either end. Do it now, with the desk empty of the temptation to just get working, because it is far harder once everything is plugged in and the desk is full.
Save the presets, then put the mat down
Now the two readings you noted pay off. If your desk has a memory keypad, save your standing height and your seated height as presets, so the surface goes to the right place at a touch instead of being eyeballed twenty times a day. This is the small thing that decides whether you keep using both heights: a desk that returns to yournumber without thought gets used; one you re-set by hand each time quietly drifts to whichever height you last left it at. Re-check the presets after a week — new desks settle, and your idea of the right height moves a little once you have stood at it for real.

The rhythm, and why it fades
The desk is set. What you do with it is the part no spec sheet covers, and it is where we are most careful to stay on the right side of what we can say. The useful, sourced version is short.
First, do not stand rigidly. Cornell’s sit-stand guidance is about changingposture often rather than replacing eight hours of sitting with eight hours of standing — the movement between the two is the point, not heroic stints at either. That is what the presets are for: a touch, a change, back to work.
Second, be honest with yourself about how much you will actually do it, because the evidence is unusually candid on this. The Cochrane review of sit-stand desks found they cut sitting by about 100 minutes a day in the short term, but only about 57 minutesat medium-term follow-up. The effect roughly halves as the novelty wears off, the evidence behind even that is rated low-quality, and the health benefits people buy these desks for are, in Cochrane’s own word, unproven— though no harms were reported either. The presets and the mat are the two things most likely to keep you in the higher half of that range rather than the lower. What order should I set a new standing desk up in?

What height should a standing desk be?
There is no single number, and anyone who gives you one has skipped the only rule that matters. OSHA’s keyboard guidance is that “elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard and hang comfortably to the side of the body” with the wrists straight. That is true standing and sitting, so the desk has tworight heights: the surface under your hands when you stand with your elbows at roughly 90°, and a lower surface when you sit the same way. Set each by your elbow, not by a chart, because the chart doesn’t know how tall you are.
Why doesn't my monitor rise to eye level when the desk goes up?
Because the monitor is sitting onthe surface, so it rises by exactly as much as the surface does — and your eyes rise by more than that when you stand up, because your whole head goes with you. The screen ends up lower relative to your eyes standing than it was sitting. The fix is to stop the monitor riding on the desktop at all: put it on an arm or a riser so it holds its own height, and set that height once from the monitor height guide.
How much cable slack does a standing desk need?
Enough to cover the full travel, and then some, because a cable pulled taut at the top of the lift is a cable that unplugs itself or drags a power brick off a shelf. ANSI/HFES 100 puts a sit/stand surface between 56 and 118 cm; by our arithmetic that is about 24″ of vertical travel between the two limits. Do I need an anti-fatigue mat?
Only if you are actually going to stand on it — the mat does nothing while it lives under a chair. It is the last thing you add, not the first, because it only earns its place once the desk, the heights and the screen are set and you have started standing for real stretches.
