Electric vs manual standing desks
The motor is not the upgrade you think it is. It buys you the one thing that decides whether you keep using a sit-stand desk at all: a change so easy you actually make it.

The honest framing of this choice is not which desk is better. Both raise and lower the same top over the same range. What you are actually choosing is a trade: a motor buys you a two-second, no-effort change and a keypad that remembers your heights, and in exchange you now own a motor, a control box, and some wiring that can one day fail. A hand crank has almost nothing to break, and charges you for that simplicity every single time you want to move the desk.
Everything below is a version of that one trade. We have not cranked or driven any of these desks ourselves — the motion figures here are makers’ and retailers’ own published numbers, cited so you can check them — so where the answer needs hands on a specific crank, we say so and point you at owner reviews.
What actually differs between them
- Effort. Electric: press and walk away. Manual: a sustained, two-handed crank of many turns to cross the full range.
- Speed.Electric: roughly an inch and a half per second on the UPLIFT V2’s published figure, so a few seconds end to end. Manual: as fast as you turn the handle, which is not very.
- Memory. Electric keypads store your seated and standing heights for one-touch recall. A crank has no memory at all.
- Noise.Electric motors hum — about 50 decibels in motion on that same frame. A crank is near silent.
- What can fail. Manual: a gearbox and columns. Electric: all of that plus a motor or two, a control box, a keypad and wiring.
- Money. Manual is generally the cheaper buy. The electric premium is paying for the effort and the presets.
Effort is the thing you feel every day
This is the difference that matters more than the spec sheet admits, because it decides whether the desk gets used the way you bought it to be. The whole point of a sit-stand desk is alternating between positions, and CCOHS is plain that you should “change working positions frequently so that working in one position is of a reasonably short duration.” A desk you rarely raise is just an expensive desk.
An electric frame makes that change frictionless. You press a button, and on a representative frame like the UPLIFT V2 the top travels at about an inch and a half per second, so the full move from sitting to standing takes a few seconds during which you do nothing. A hand crank makes the same change a small job: both hands, many turns, and an interruption to whatever you were doing. That friction is quietly decisive. If raising the desk is a chore, most people simply stop, and the standing half of the day — the reason for the purchase — slowly disappears.
So the motor is not really buying you speed. It is buying you the likelihood that you keep switching in month six and month sixteen, not just in week one. If you are the kind of user who will genuinely settle into one seated height and one standing height and swap between them a couple of times a day, a crank handles that fine. If you suspect friction will win, the motor is buying the behavior you actually came for.
Presets, and who really needs them
An electric keypad remembers your heights. Tap the standing preset and the desk finds it exactly, every time, without you eyeballing the column. That matters most in two situations: a desk shared by two people with different heights, and anyone who switches often enough that hunting for the right spot becomes its own small friction. A crank has no memory — you learn the position, or mark the column with tape, and set it by eye.
For a single user with a settled routine, marking the column is genuinely good enough, and it never stops working. For a two-person or hot-desk setup, presets stop being a luxury and start being the feature you bought the electronics for.
Noise, if you share the room
An electric desk hums while it moves — around 50 decibels in motion on the frame we have a figure for — for the few seconds it is travelling. That is nothing in an empty home office and briefly annoying mid-call, on a shared wall, or in a room where someone else is concentrating. A manual desk is effectively silent. If you take a lot of calls and like to switch during them, that quiet is a real, if small, point in the crank’s favor.
What can break — the three-year question
This is where the case for manual is strongest, and also where it is most often overstated. A crank desk has no motor, control box, keypad, or wiring, so the failure modes people dread on an electric — a dead motor, a glitchy keypad, an anti-collision sensor that misfires — simply are not present. Over a long horizon, fewer electronic parts is a genuine advantage.
But “manual” does not mean “nothing to fail.” A crank still drives a gearbox and a pair of columns, and a cheaply made gearbox can wear, bind, or develop backlash. Weight capacity is a frame question, not a motor question
It is tempting to assume electric desks hold more, and the top of the market does trend that way, but the cause is the frame and columns, not the motor. What a motor per leg genuinely adds is even lifting under a heavy or lopsided load, where a single crank shaft has to drag both sides up together. Price, honestly
A crank desk is generally the cheaper buy, because it has fewer parts and no electronics, and that is a real, defensible reason to choose one. The electric premium is not buying you a better surface or a stronger frame by default — it is buying the effortless change and the presets. Spend the same money on a crank and more of it goes into the top and the steel. The pneumatic middle ground
Between the two sits gas-spring, or pneumatic, lift: a counterbalanced spring that lets you raise or lower the surface in one smooth motion with no power and nothing electronic to fail. It is a genuinely appealing idea — the effortlessness of electric without the motor. The honest limits are that the spring has to be matched to the weight you put on it, the travel range is typically shorter than a full electric column, and a gas spring can lose tension over years. You will meet the mechanism most often on frames and converters rather than on full-size sit-stand desks, and it suits a fixed, known load better than a setup you keep changing.
Who each one is for
Buy the manual crank if you are a single user, on a budget, who will set one seated and one standing height and switch a couple of times a day; if you share a wall or take calls and want silence; or if you simply value having as little as possible that can break. A handle you turn twice a day is not a hardship, and you keep the money.
Buy the electric if you will switch often and know that any friction will make you quit; if the desk is shared and presets earn their keep; if you run a heavy multi-monitor load that wants even, motorized lifting; or if you would rather the change be so easy you never think about it. Just spend the premium on build quality and warranty, not on extra buttons.
Either way, the decision that lasts is not the mechanism. It is whether the desk is built to still work in three years and whether you will still be raising it then. Pick the one that keeps you switching, buy it well, and the motor argument mostly takes care of itself.

How much faster is an electric desk than a hand crank?

A crank moves the top a small fraction of an inch per turn, so crossing the whole range is many turns of a two-handed effort. The clock difference is minor; the effort difference is what changes your behavior.
What about pneumatic or gas-spring standing desks?
They are a real third option and a sensible middle ground for some people. A gas spring counterbalances the weight of the top, so one smooth motion raises or lowers it with no cord and no motor to fail. The catch is that the spring has to be tuned to your load, the travel range is usually shorter than a full electric column, and a spring can weaken over years of use. You see them most on converters and lighter desks. If the idea appeals, a converter is where you will meet the mechanism most often.
Does electric mean it can hold more weight?
Not by itself. Capacity is set mostly by the frame and columns, not by whether a motor turns them — though the desks with the highest published capacities do tend to be dual-motor electrics, and a motor per leg lifts a heavy, uneven load more evenly than a single crank shaft.
