Cable management for dual monitors
A second monitor does not add a cable, it adds a fistful — two power, two video, usually a dock, sometimes speakers, all converging at one spot behind two screens that move. The answer is not more ties. It is fewer cables at the source, and one run down instead of two.

A second monitor does not add one cable. It adds a fistful, and it drops all of them at the same spot.
Think about what actually arrives with the second screen. Another power lead or brick. Another video cable to the machine. If you were already running a hub or a dock, its cable is in the pile too. Often a set of speakers. Maybe a webcam that used to clip to the single screen and now has an opinion about which one. A single-monitor desk runs two or three cables to the tower and the wall; a dual-monitor desk runs six to eight, and they all converge behind the two screens like traffic merging onto one lane.
That convergence is the whole problem, and it is a different problem from the single-screen one. Ordinary desk-cable advice assumes a modest bundle and a couple of runs. Here you have roughly double the mass meeting at one point — and if the monitors are on arms, that point moves every time you reposition a screen. This page is about that specific pile.
Count the cords before you buy anything
Before a single tie comes out of the packet, name what you are dealing with. On a typical two-screen desk:
- Two power cables— one per monitor, each often ending in a brick that has to live somewhere.
- Two video cablesto the machine — HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C, one run per screen.
- One dock or USB-hub cable, if your peripherals feed through one — and on a two-screen desk they usually should.
- Whatever else clips to a screen: speakers, a webcam, a light bar, a phone charger parked at the edge.
Add it up, and the count is the point. You have not made the single-monitor problem slightly worse; you have roughly doubled the number of cables arriving at one spot, and doubled the number of bricks that need a home. Every decision below is about getting that count down and then routing what is left as one thing instead of a dozen.
The best cable is the one that isn’t there
The highest-value move on this page is not a tie or a tray. It is reducing the number of cables at the source, before you manage any of them, and there are two ways to do it.
Run everything through one dock.Instead of both monitors and every peripheral trailing a separate lead back to the machine, a dock or hub collects them and sends a single cable to the computer. Your two video runs, your keyboard, your mouse, your webcam and your drive all terminate at the dock; the dock terminates at the tower. On a laptop the effect is stark — one cable connects and disconnects the entire desk. It does not reduce the cables on the desk, but it reduces the ones crossing off it, which is where the visible mess lives.
Daisy-chain the screens, if they support it.DisplayPort with MST, or Thunderbolt, lets the second monitor feed off the first rather than running its own cable all the way back to the machine — monitor one to the computer, monitor two to monitor one. That removes a full video run from the pile. The catch is that it depends on your particular monitors and graphics setup supporting the feature, so this is a read-the-spec-sheet move rather than a universal one; we are not going to tell you your screens do it, because we cannot see your screens. Check before you count on it.
Either way, the principle holds: a cable you eliminate at the source is a cable you never have to bundle, loop, hide or replace. Spend the effort here first and the rest of the job shrinks.
Bundle at each monitor, not in a heap
Once the count is as low as it goes, work per screen. Each monitor’s cables — its power, its video, any USB feeding a built-in hub — get gathered and fastened close to the monitor, so each screen presents one tidy tail rather than three loose strands. Do this at the top, near where the cables leave the panel, and the rest of the run has a single, defined thing to follow.
Use hook-and-loop ties, not zip ties, and on a dual-monitor desk that recommendation is close to unconditional. The reason is that you will move these screens. You will swap a cable, add a peripheral, or re-angle an arm, and a bundle you can undo with your fingers is worth a great deal over one you have to cut and redo. The honest caveat is the one we make everywhere on this site: VELCRO does not publish a cycle count. Its own technical data sheet rates ONE-WRAP durability as “Cycle Life — Medium” — a word on a descriptive scale, sitting beside peel and shear figures that areactual numbers — and the same document notes that its data “should not be used for specification purposes.” The “1,000 cycles” you will find quoted online traces to nobody. For a desk where you re-dress the bundle every time a screen moves, how many times a tie survives is exactly the number you would want, and it is exactly the number nobody prints. Leave a service loop, because the screens move
Here is the failure that is specific to arms, and it is the same one that catches people on a standing desk: a taut cable fights the thing it is attached to.
A monitor arm sweeps an arc. It lifts, it swings, it tilts, and a good dual arm gives each screen a wide range so you can toe them in, stagger their heights, or push one aside. A cable dressed tight to that arm quietly cancels half of that range — the screen reaches the point where the cable goes straight and simply stops, or worse, drags the plug at the connector until the signal drops. The fix is a service loop: a deliberate slack curve in each cable, sized to the arm’s full travel, that opens as the arm extends and closes as it folds back.
This is where the arm does half the job for you. Most quality dual arms — the ones we cover in the dual-arm roundup — run cables through an internal channel or a clip-on cover along the arm, which routes the loop along the arm’s own geometry so it moves with the joint rather than across it. Anchor your slack to the arm’s channel or to the fixed base at the bottom, never bridging a moving joint to a fixed point with no give. Then test it the way you would test a standing desk: run each screen through its entirerange — full height, full swing, full tilt — and watch the cables, not the screen. Anything that goes straight is a future disconnection.
Gather everything into one run down
Now the two tidy tails, one per monitor, meet and become a single downstream run. This is the move that makes a dual-monitor desk look like a single-monitor desk from the front: everything drops as one bundle to a defined place under or behind the desk, rather than two curtains falling wherever gravity takes them. Bring the two tails together at the back edge or a rear leg, tie them into one, and send that one bundle down.
Where the run lands is the other half. The two power bricks and the strip they plug into want to live in a contained box rather than in a pile on the floor — both for tidiness and because a heap of bricks on carpet is a heat and dust trap. This is the one place in cable management where a product cites a real, named safety standard: D-Line publishes that its Cable Tidy Unit is “safety tested and certified to BS EN 60670-22:2006”and made of electrically-safe ABS. That is rare enough to be worth saying — most of this category publishes nothing you can check. The single cables that keep escaping
Two things always refuse to join the bundle: the leads you plug and unplug. A phone charger, a headset, the cable to a second machine you dock occasionally — these live loose at the desk edge and slide off the back the moment you let go.
An adhesive clip is the fix, and the Bluelounge CableDrop is the usual name. One caveat decides whether it works for you, and it is a caveat about a number: Bluelounge’s own page says the Mini is “ideal for cables with a diameter of up to 4mm-5mm,” while the Amazon listing for the same product claims “up to 5/16-inch”— 7.9 mm, roughly double. The manufacturer wins, and 4–5 mm is genuinely small: many USB-C, HDMI and monitor power leads are thicker and simply will not seat. Measure your cable against Bluelounge’s figure, not the shop’s, before you buy. Bluelounge publishes no material for the drop itself and no durability figure, so how long the adhesive holds is not a number we can give you either.
The order to do it in
Sequence matters, because each step constrains the next, and the most common way to spend a Saturday twice is to dress a beautiful bundle and then discover a screen no longer reaches where you want it.
- Cut the count.Dock, and if your screens support it, daisy-chain — before you manage anything.
- Mount the strip. Off the floor if you can, in a box or tray, so the bricks have a home.
- Bundle at each monitor with hook-and-loop, loosely.
- Build a service loopper screen, sized to the arm’s full range.
- Run one bundle down to the strip, from near a rear leg rather than the middle.
- Test every screen through its entire range, and only then tighten anything.

What we can’t tell you
We have not built your setup, and there are things a spec sheet does not contain. We cannot tell you how many times a given tie will fasten before it stops gripping — VELCRO rates that as a word, not a number. We cannot tell you whether a clip’s adhesive survives a summer on your particular desk finish, or lifts the veneer when you remove it. We cannot tell you that your monitors daisy-chain, because that is on their spec sheets and your graphics setup, not ours.
What we can tell you is the shape of the job. A second screen roughly doubles the cords at one point; the cheapest fix is to eliminate some at the source; each screen bundles to one tail with a service loop so the arm keeps its range; and the two tails become one run down to a contained strip. Do that in order and a two-monitor desk manages like a one-monitor desk. Buy formats before you do it, and you end up with a drawer full of cable management and the same mess.
Common questions
How many cables does a second monitor actually add?
More than one. A second screen brings its own power lead — often ending in a brick that has to live somewhere — its own video cable to the machine, and frequently pulls a dock or hub cable into the pile as well, plus anything that clips to a screen like speakers or a webcam. A single-monitor desk typically runs two or three cables off it; a two-screen desk runs six to eight, and they all arrive at the same spot. The count is the problem, which is why the first move is reducing it rather than tidying it.
Do I need a docking station for two monitors?
You do not needone, but it is the single most effective way to cut the visible mess. A dock collects both video cables and every peripheral and sends one cable to the computer, so the clutter that crosses off the desk drops to a single lead — dramatic on a laptop, still useful on a tower. It does not reduce the cables sitting on the desk, only the ones leaving it. If you would rather eliminate a cable outright, check whether your screens daisy-chain instead.
Can I daisy-chain two monitors to use fewer cables?
Sometimes — it depends on your monitors and your graphics setup. DisplayPort with MST, or Thunderbolt, lets the second screen feed off the first instead of running its own cable back to the machine, which removes a full video run from the pile. Whether your particular screens support it is on their spec sheets, and we are not going to assume they do. If they do, it is one of the cleanest reductions available, because it eliminates a cable rather than hiding one.
Why won't my monitor arm reach its full range?
The usual mechanical reason is a cable going taut. A monitor arm sweeps an arc, and a cable dressed tight to it hits the point where it goes straight and stops the arm — or drags on the connector until the display drops out. The fix is a service loop: a deliberate slack curve sized to the arm’s full travel. Route it through the arm’s own cable channel where there is one, and test each screen through its entire range before you tighten anything. Velcro ties or zip ties for a dual-monitor setup?
Hook-and-loop, almost always, because you will move these screens and re-dress the bundle. VELCRO’s ONE-WRAP fastens to itself and undoes with your fingers; a zip tie has to be cut.
