Under every key on your keyboard is a mechanism that decides how the key feels, how loud it is when it bottoms out, and how many times it can be pressed before it wears. There are two broad families of that mechanism — mechanical switches and the membrane-and-scissor designs that most keyboards ship with — and choosing between them for an office is a real decision, just not the one people usually argue about. It is not mainly about comfort, and we will get to why. It is about feel, noise, longevity, cost, and repair.
A quick definition so the comparison is clean. A membrane keyboard registers a press by pushing a key down onto a printed rubber layer; the low-profile scissor switch under most laptop and slim desktop keyboards is a refined cousin of the same idea, with a crisper, shorter press. Individual mechanical switches are rated for far more presses than a typical membrane before they wear, so a good mechanical board tends to outlast several cheaper keyboards. The value question is what you are buying with the premium: feel, longevity, and repairability, none of which is comfort in itself.
