How to arrange an L-shaped desk
An L-desk gives you two runs of surface and one place to sit. Give each run a job, one to work at and one to reach to, and it is the best layout in a home office. Leave it to chance and half of it collects clutter.

An L-shaped desk is not just a bigger desk; it is two desks that meet at a corner, and the mistake almost everyone makes is treating both runs as equal. They are not. One run is where you work — head-on, keyboard and monitor, hours at a time. The other is where you reach — a laptop, a second screen, notes, the stuff you turn to but do not sit square to. Assign those roles deliberately and the L-desk is the best layout most home offices can have. Leave it to chance and one run becomes a shelf for clutter.

1. Decide the primary run and the return
Before anything goes on the desk, name the two runs. The primary run is where you actually work: it holds the main monitor, the keyboard and the mouse, and it is the surface you sit square to. The return (the shorter or secondary run) is the reach zone: a laptop off to the side, a second screen, a notebook, a docking station, the printer. You turn to it; you do not work head-on at it.
Pick the primary run by two things: length and outlook. The longer run gives your main work more depth, which you need to seat a monitor at OSHA’s “at least 20 inches” and ideally out toward the 20–40″band. Outlook matters too — most people work better facing into the room with their back to a wall than facing a wall with the room behind them. Choose the run that gives you both, make it primary, and the return’s job defines itself: everything that is not moment-to-moment work lives there. This single decision is what keeps the desk from splitting into a working half and a junk half. 2. Corner or long side? Where the monitor goes
This is the real fork, and both answers are legitimate. The deciding rule is OSHA’s: the monitor should be “directly in front of you and at least 20 inches away,” and never “farther than 35 degrees to the left or right.” The question is which arrangement puts the screen there.
The corner.Facing the corner has one genuine advantage: the diagonal into the corner is the deepest point on the whole desk, so it offers the most viewing distance. That is a real gift for a large 27″ or 32″ screen, which needs to sit far back to fall inside the comfortable window. When you face the corner, both runs flank you and everything is within a short swivel. The price is that the deep triangle of surface behind the screen becomes hard-to-reach dead space, and you have to square your chair to the corner — sit at an angle and the “directly in front” rule quietly breaks. A monitor arm helps here, lifting the screen off the deep corner and pushing it back so you reclaim some of that surface.
The long side.Putting the main monitor on the long run, with the return to one side, lets you sit square to one wall and keeps the geometry simple: the screen is straight ahead, the keyboard is in front of it, and the return is a quarter-turn away for everything else. You give up the extra corner distance, so this suits a 24″ or 27″ more than a giant panel, but it is the more natural, less fussy setup for most people and it wastes no corner space. As a rule of thumb: corner for one big screen you want as far back as possible, long side for a face-forward setup with the return doing support duty.
3. The chair is the pivot — plan the reach zones
The thing an L-desk gives you that a straight desk cannot is a swivel instead of a stretch. Placed right, your chair sits at a point where both runs are within an easy turn, so you rotate the whole chair to reach the return rather than twisting your spine or reaching across your body. That is the entire ergonomic case for the shape, and it only works if you park the chair at the pivot — roughly where the two runs’ reach arcs overlap.
Inside that, sort your gear into two zones. The primary zone is the arc directly in front of you on the primary run: keyboard, mouse, and anything you touch constantly, close enough that your “elbows stay in close to the body and are bent between 90 and 120 degrees” and your “hands, wrists, and forearms” stay “straight, in-line and roughly parallel to the floor.” Nothing you use every minute should force a full reach. The secondary zoneis the return and the outer edges: the laptop, the phone, the notepad, the second screen — things you turn to a few times an hour. If you catch yourself reaching across your body or rotating your torso to grab something, it is in the wrong zone; move it to the run you face, or closer on the return. And keep the base right underneath all of it: OSHA wants your “thighs and hips… supported and generally parallel to the floor,” so make sure the corner’s apron or a support leg is not stealing your knee room where the two runs meet.
If a second monitor is part of the plan, angle it toward you rather than laying it flat along the return, so it stays inside the 35-degree cone. 4. Cable routing across two surfaces
Cables are where L-desks get messy, because there are two runs to wire and usually only one wall with power. The fix is to stop thinking of it as two desks and route everything to one point: the corner. Run each side’s cables along its back edge toward the corner, gather them there, and make a single, tidy drop to the floor and the outlet from that hub. One drop, not two tangles at two far ends.
Plan the hub next to power. Work out which corner is nearest the wall outlet and make that the drop point; if the far run needs its own power (a monitor, a charger, a lamp), run one short extension or a power strip along the back of that run so it feeds from the same hub rather than stringing a cable diagonally across the floor. Anything that travels — a laptop you take away, a phone charger — wants a short, reachable tail at the front edge of the return, so you are not fishing behind the desk each time. Put it together: a worked layout
For most home offices, the setup that just works looks like this. Make the longer run your primary, positioned so you sit with your back near a wall and face the room. Put the main monitor either dead ahead on that run, or into the corner if it is a large screen and you want the extra distance — square your chair to whichever you choose so the screen is directly in front and its top edge is “at or below eye level.”Keep the keyboard and mouse in the primary zone under your straight, parallel forearms.
