Standing desk vs walking pad
A walking pad only works once you already own a desk that goes up to standing height. So before you compare these as alternatives, look at what each one actually changes — and why most people who buy a pad end up needing both, not one.

Short answer: these are not really competing purchases. A walking pad is a flat motorized belt about five inches thick that sits on the floor — and unless the desk above it can actually rise to standing height, there is nothing to put it under. So this comparison is less “which do I buy” and more “which do I buy first.” The desk goes first, almost always.
Here is the honest version of the rest of it. A standing desk changes your position— it swaps one static posture, sitting, for another, standing — and the research on that swap is real but modest: Cochrane’s systematic review calls the health benefits very uncertain. A walking pad changes something else: it adds continuous, low-intensity movement on top of whichever posture you are in, and the research on that, while much smaller, shows a real increase in energy burned. Neither one is a settled health intervention. Both are furniture decisions dressed up as one.
What each one actually changes
It helps to be precise about the mechanism, because the marketing for both products blurs it.
A standing deskchanges your position. Sitting becomes standing. That is a static-to-static swap — your joints move to a new configuration and then, if you are like most people, stay there for a while. A walking pad changes something else: it adds continuous, low-intensity movement — typically 1–4 mph — while you remain upright. It does not change your posture by itself; you are still standing at a desk, just a desk with a slow belt under your feet. The claim behind it is not “standing is better than sitting.” The claim is “light continuous stepping burns more energy than standing still,” which is a different, narrower claim, with its own separate evidence — covered below.
Put the two mechanisms side by side and the relationship is obvious: a walking pad is an addition to the standing half of your day, not a replacement for it. You cannot walk while sitting. The standing desk’s job has to be done first.
The evidence on standing, briefly
We have covered this in full elsewhere, so here is the compressed, honest version. Cochrane’s systematic review (Shrestha et al., 2018, CD010912) pooled 34 studies and 3,397 participants and found sit-stand desks cut workplace sitting. Cochrane’s own plain-language summary puts it this way, verbatim:
“people who used sit-stand desks sat between 30 minutes and two hours less compared to when they used conventional desks during the working day.”
But on whether less sitting translates into better health, Cochrane is equally direct: their “potential health benefits are very uncertain.” On weight specifically, they are blunt rather than hedged:
“Standing instead of sitting hardly increases energy expenditure, so we should not expect a sit-stand desk to help in losing weight.”
And on safety:
“Standing more did not produce harmful effects in the studies, such as musculoskeletal pain, varicose veins, or a decrease in productivity.”
No harms, no proven benefit beyond less sitting. That is the real state of the evidence for standing, and it does not change because a treadmill gets involved — because Cochrane never studied one. The evidence on walking while you work
This is a genuinely separate literature from Cochrane’s, and it is important not to blur the two. Cochrane reviewed sit-standdesks — furniture that changes your posture. It said nothing about treadmill desks or walking pads, and nothing in that 34-study review speaks to what happens when you add stepping on top of standing.
The relevant work here is a 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis in BMC Public Health(Oye-Somefun, Azizi, Ardern & Rotondi), which pooled 13 studies and 351 participants— a far smaller evidence base than Cochrane’s, worth keeping in mind before treating any of this as equally settled. In controlled laboratory conditions, it reports:
“a significant increase in energy expenditure (105.23 kcal per hour, 95% CI: 90.41 to 120.04 kcal per hour)”
for treadmill-desk walking compared with sitting, along with a measurable rise in metabolic rate. That is a real, mechanistically unsurprising effect: moving muscles burn more fuel than motionless ones, in a way that standing still mostly does not.
Where it gets more cautious — and this is the part that matters if you are hoping a walking pad will do something for your body, not just your step count — is the workplace data. Outside the lab, the same review found workplace treadmill-desk use produced a real but small drop in sitting time, but “no evidence of statistically significant changes in other metabolic outcomes” such as blood pressure. The authors’ own read is that this is more likely underpowered studies than proof of zero effect — but that is precisely the same shape of uncertainty Cochrane found for standing desks: a real short-term mechanical effect, and an unproven case that it changes your health.
So: more calories burned per hour walking than sitting, measured in a lab, on decent evidence. Whether that adds up to anything for your body over months of real use is not established. We are not going to tell you it will, because nobody has shown that it does.
The catch: a walking pad needs a standing desk under it
Here is the part of this comparison that is actually decisive, and it has nothing to do with either study above.
A walking pad is a motorized belt, and it has to sit on the floor. Its own manufacturer’s spec sheet for a widely sold model, the WalkingPad C2, lists it at roughly 4.9 inches thick unfolded. Stand on it, and you are now standing 4.9 inches taller than you would be on bare floor.
That is not a rounding error against the height your desk surface needs to reach. A fixed desk is built around 29″, which is already taller than most people need sitting down. Standing requires considerably more: ANSI/HFES 100, the accredited national ergonomics standard, specifies that a sit/stand work surface must adjust up to at least 118 cm, about 46.5 inches. A fixed 29-inch desk is roughly 17 inches short of that ceiling — before you even add the pad’s deck height on top of your feet.
So a walking pad cannot be set up under an ordinary desk at all. There is no version of “just slide it under my existing desk and start walking” that ends well, ergonomically — you would be reaching down at your keyboard while standing on a platform, which is a worse mismatch than plain standing at a too-low desk. It needs a surface that already goes up near that 46.5-inch mark, which in practice means a genuine height-adjustable standing desk, not a fixed desk, and really not a compact converter either — a converter’s own lift is added on top of your existing desk height, and stacking a converter’s travel and a walking pad’s deck on top of a 29-inch desk gets tall and unstable fast.
This is the framing the marketing skips: a walking pad is not an alternative to a standing desk. It is an accessory that only works once the standing-desk problem is already solved.
Noise, speed, and typing while you move
Assume you do have the desk. Three practical constraints decide whether the pad underneath it actually gets used.
Speed.These are walking devices, not treadmills built for running. The WalkingPad C2’s published range is 1–4 mph, which is typical for the category — the belts and motors are sized for a stride, not a jog. The one controlled study we found on typing and cognitive performance while walking at a desk tested 1.5 mphspecifically — slow, deliberate walking, not the top of that range.
Typing. That study (Larson, LeCheminant et al., PLOS ONE, 2015) had people type and take cognitive tests while walking at 1.5 mph versus sitting. The result was a real but modest decline: net typing speed came out about 13 words per minute slowerwhile walking, with a similar-sized drop on a working-memory/attention test (about 9% lower) and a learning test (about 7% lower). The authors’ own caveat matters here: “performance of both groups was within the normal range” on those tests — so this is a real cost, not a catastrophic one, and it comes from one study at one slow speed, not a systematic review. If your job is heavy, fast, accurate typing, expect some friction. If it is calls, reading, or lighter-touch tasks, it likely matters less.
Noise. Walking pads are not silent. Manufacturer-rated noise levels for the category run roughly 42 to 65 dB, with independent measurements at a typical 2 mph pace landing around 43 to 59 dB— for reference, a quiet office is about 40 dB and normal conversation is about 60 dB. And the motor is often not the loudest part: footfall on the belt frequently carries more than the hum underneath it. If you are on video calls often, in an apartment with thin floors, or sharing a room, that is worth testing for yourself before you commit a desk worth of space to one.
Ceiling height and floor space
Two more physical constraints, both easy to check and easy to skip entirely until moving day.
Ceiling height.You are already taller standing than sitting, and the pad’s roughly 5-inch deck adds a bit more on top of that. In a room with a standard 8-foot ceiling this is very unlikely to matter. It is worth a tape measure, not a worry, if your setup is in a converted attic, a sloped-ceiling room, or a low basement — anywhere headroom was already tight before a treadmill entered the picture.
Footprint.A walking pad needs its own floor space in front of the desk, permanently, whether or not it is switched on — the WalkingPad C2, folded, is still roughly 32.5 by 20.4 inches. That is real square footage in a home office, on top of whatever the desk itself already occupies.
Cost, in brackets
We do not print prices here; they move too fast to stay honest on a static page. In relative terms: a walking pad sits well below a full height-adjustable desk, and typically overlaps with the lower-to-middle range of a standing desk converter. But that comparison is a little misleading on its own, because — as above — the pad is not a substitute for the desk’s cost, it is additive to it. Budget for the desk first. The pad is the smaller, optional line item after that, not an alternative to the bigger one.
Choose a standing desk if…
- You do not already own a height-adjustable desk. This is the foundational purchase; nothing else on this page works without it.
- What you actually want is less sitting, full stop — the thing Cochrane’s review actually supports, on real if low-quality evidence.

Add a walking pad if…
- You already have a desk that reaches a genuine standing height — near that 46.5-inch HFES figure, not a converter perched on a 29-inch desk.
- Your work can absorb a documented ~13 wpm typing cost at slow walking speeds — calls, reading, email, and planning, rather than sustained fast typing.
- Your room can take the noise (roughly 42–65 dB) and the floor footprint, and your ceiling has the inches to spare.
- You are drawn to the claim the evidence actually supports — more energy burned per hour walking than standing still, per the 2021 meta-analysis — rather than any specific promise about weight or long-term health, which that same evidence does not make.

Common questions
Do I need a standing desk to use a walking pad?
In practice, yes. A walking pad is a motorized belt roughly 4.9 inches thickthat sits on the floor — stand on one and you are that much taller than standing on bare carpet. But the same review’s workplace data found “no evidence of statistically significant changes in other metabolic outcomes,”and it is a much smaller evidence base — 351 people — than Cochrane’s 3,397-person review of standing desks, which found standing itself “hardly increases energy expenditure, so we should not expect a sit-stand desk to help in losing weight.” Walking clearly burns more than standing still. Whether that adds up to weight loss over months of real use has not been shown either way.
Can you actually type while walking on a pad?
