How high should a standing desk be?

Most people set a sit-stand desk to their height, or run it up to the number on the box. Both are the wrong number. The one measurement that decides it is your standing elbow height — and the screen has to follow it up.

Ask how high a standing desk should be and most sources will answer with your height. Take your stature in inches, multiply by some fraction, and there is your number. It is a tidy formula, and it is answering a question nobody asked.

A standing desk is not set to your height. It is set to your elbows. The work surface should land at roughly the height of your elbows when you are standing relaxed — shoulders down, upper arms hanging, forearms level — so your hands fall onto the keyboard without your wrists breaking upward or your shoulders creeping toward your ears. That number is mostly about the length of your torso and upper arm, and it has almost nothing to do with how tall you are and nothing at all to do with the figure printed on the desk’s box.

This page is about the standing figure specifically: where a sit-stand desk should sit when you are on your feet, and how to find it. That is a different number from your seated desk height — that one has its own calculator— a different question from how big the desk should be, which is a matter of footprint, and a different question again from how often you should be standing at all. Here we solve for one thing only: the height of the top when you stand.

The one measurement that decides it

OSHA writes the rule for us, and it is the same sentence whether you are sitting or standing. From its computer-workstations eTool, on keyboards:

“Elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard and hang comfortably to the side of the body.”

Read it slowly, because the whole page is inside it. The keyboard — and therefore the surface it rests on — belongs at elbow height, and the elbows in question are yours, in the posture you are actually in. Sit down and your elbows sit at one absolute height above the floor; stand up and they rise to another, higher one. The keyboard follows them both. That is why a sit-stand desk exists: not to be tall, but to meet your elbows in two different places.

So the measurement is this. Stand the way you stand when you work — in your usual shoes, weight even on both feet, not braced or drawn up. Let your upper arms hang straight down and bend your elbows to a right angle so your forearms are level, as if you were about to type. Now measure from the floor to the underside of your elbow, or to the bottom of your relaxed hand where it would meet the keys. That distance, give or take, is where the top of the desk wants to be. Set the desk there, rest your hands on it, and check the wrist: OSHA’s companion point is that the wrist should stay straight and neutral, neither cocked up nor dropped. If your wrist bends up to reach the keys, the surface is too high; if it dips, too low. Adjust in the small amounts a powered desk makes trivial, and stop when the forearm-to-hand line is flat.

Why it isn’t your height, and isn’t the desk’s maximum

The height formulas fail for a simple reason: two people who measure the same from floor to crown can have elbows two inches apart, because one carries more of that height in the legs and the other in the torso and upper arm. Stature predicts elbow height only loosely, so a formula built on stature inherits that looseness — it hands you a starting guess that you then have to correct against your real elbows anyway. Skip the middle step and measure the elbows.

The other failure is more expensive, because it feels like doing the right thing. People raise a new desk to the top of its travel, reason that “up is the standing position,” and leave it there. But the top of the range is not a setting meant for you; it is meant for the tallest person who might ever buy that desk. ANSI/HFES 100 — an ANSI-accredited national standard — puts the sit/stand adjustment range at 56 to 118 cm, which is roughly 22 to 46″ by our conversion. That ceiling of 118 cm exists so a very tall user’s elbows are covered. Run an average-height person’s desk up to it and the surface sits well above their elbows, which forces the wrists up and the shoulders into a permanent half-shrug — the standing version of a desk that is too tall to sit at.

It is worth saying plainly that OSHA itself declines to name a desk height. Its desks page prescribes clearance — room for your knees and toes underneath when seated — but no fixed height for the work surface at all. The height, in OSHA’s framing, is not a property of the desk. It is a property of the person, and the desk’s job is to move to meet it. The 118 cm figure is the length of the road, not the destination.

The screen has to come up too — the trap in the standing setup

Here is the part that catches almost everyone the first week, and it follows directly from getting the elbow height right.

When you raise the surface to your standing elbow height, the keyboard arrives exactly where it should be. But if your monitor is sitting flat on that same surface, it rises by precisely the same amount as the keyboard — a few inches — while your eyes just rose by however much taller you are standing than sitting, which is a great deal more. The net effect is that your screen, which may have been close to right when you were seated, is now well below where it should be. OSHA’s monitor guidance is that “the top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level,” with the center “15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level” and the screen “between 20 and 40 inches” from your eyes. A monitor resting on the desktop at standing height typically misses that low, leaving you looking down and tipping your head forward to compensate.

This is why a sit-stand desk on its own is only half a standing setup. The surface handles the keyboard; the screen needs to be lifted independentlyof the surface so it can travel further than the desktop does — on a monitor arm, a tall riser, or a laptop stand with an external keyboard beneath it. The desk sets your hands; something else has to set your eyes. Get the elbow height perfect and leave the screen on the desktop, and you have simply traded a low-keyboard problem for a low-screen one.

What the standard mandates, and what it leaves to you

It is worth being precise about what ANSI/HFES 100 does and does not tell you, because its numbers get quoted as if they were target heights. They are not. The standard specifies an adjustment rangea compliant work surface must be able to cover — 56 to 72 cm for a sit-only surface, and the wider 56 to 118 cm for sit/stand. That is a statement about the desk’s engineering, not about where you should park it. A desk that meets the standard can reach your number; the standard never says what your number is.

We can point at the direction with some arithmetic, as long as we are honest about whose it is. Take the ANSUR II anthropometric survey, add its median popliteal height to its median seated elbow-rest height — barefoot, seat at knee-crook height, elbows at a right angle — and you get a seated desk figure of about 26.6″ for the median man and 24.4″ for the median woman.

That addition is ours, not a published desk height, and ANSUR is a US Army population — younger and fitter than most people reading this. And note what it is: a seated number, the one the desk height calculator is for. Your standing elbow height is a different, larger measurement, and we are not going to invent a median for it — you take that one off your own body, standing, the way described above. Treat the seated figures purely as proof of the point: real elbow heights sit inside the standard’s range and vary person to person, so measure yourself rather than trusting a formula.

How to set it, in order

Assuming the desk is already the right size for your room — that is a separate decision you make from footprint, not height — the setup is four steps:

  1. Find your standing elbow height. Stand as you work, elbows bent to a right angle, forearms level, and measure floor-to-elbow. Do it in your usual shoes and on your usual mat.
  2. Raise the surface to that height and test the wrist. Rest your hands on the keyboard. The forearm-to-hand line should be flat and the wrist neutral. Too high and the wrist cocks up; too low and it drops. Nudge until it is straight.
  3. Lift the screen separately. The desk sets your hands; now set your eyes. Raise the monitor on an arm or riser until the top is at or a touch below eye level and it sits 20 to 40 inches away. The desktop will not get it there on its own.
  4. Save it as a preset. Then do the whole thing again seated, from the seated calculator, and save that too. The reason to buy a moving desk is to have both numbers a button away, not to guess between them.

The three questions this page is not answering

Because they get run together constantly, it is worth drawing the lines sharply:

  • Not the seated height. The desk height calculator gives you the lower, in-the-chair number. This page is the standing one. A sit-stand desk needs both, saved as two presets.
  • Not the footprint. How wide and deep the desk should be is a question of what size desk you need — your monitors, your room, your reach. That is orthogonal to height; a desk can be the perfect height and the wrong size.
  • Not the cadence.How much of the day to spend standing, and why the answer is not “all of it,” is how long to stand at a standing desk. Getting the height right only matters once you are actually up there.

One caveat about full height

A sit-stand desk is at its least stable when it is fully raised: the legs are at maximum extension, the leverage on any wobble is greatest, and standing height is exactly where you put it to work. If yours shivers when you type on your feet, that is not a reason to lower it below your elbows — it is a stability problem with its own fixes, which we cover in how to fix a wobbly standing desk. Setting the height for your body and steadying the desk are two separate jobs; do not solve the second by compromising the first. What this page is not

This is geometry, not medicine, and it is not written by anyone qualified to give the latter. Stephen is a home-office enthusiast who reads standards documents and spec sheets — not an ergonomist, physiotherapist or clinician. What we have described is where two things line up: your standing elbows and the surface under your keyboard, using OSHA’s published keyboard and monitor guidance and the adjustment range in a national standard.

We have not told you that a particular height will relieve, prevent or cure anything, because that is not a claim we can make or check. If standing at a desk consistently hurts — wrists, shoulders, back, neck — the person to see has a license, and no measurement on this page substitutes for one. What this page can do is make sure the number you set is derived from your own body rather than a formula or a box, that the screen comes up to meet the keyboard rather than being left behind, and that you know which of the four desk questions you are actually answering when you reach for the up button.

Common questions

So how high should my standing desk actually be?

At about the height of your elbows when you stand relaxed, shoulders down and forearms level — so your hands rest on the keyboard without your wrists bending up or down. That is OSHA’s keyboard line applied standing: “elbows should be about the same height as the keyboard.” It is a number you measure on yourself, standing, in the shoes you work in. It is not a fraction of your height and it is not the top of the desk’s travel.

Can't I just use my height, like height times 0.6?

Those formulas assume everyone’s arms and torso are proportioned the same way, and they are not — two people the same height can have elbows a couple of inches apart. The formula gets you a starting guess and then you have to check it against your actual elbows anyway, so you may as well measure the elbows first. For the same reason we do not print a single “correct” standing height on this page: there isn’t one. There is yours.

Is the desk's maximum height the standing height?

No, and this is the most common mistake. The top of a sit-stand desk’s travel exists so it can fit the tallestpeople who might buy it — ANSI/HFES 100 sets the sit/stand range as high as 118 cm(about 46″ by our conversion). Running the desk to its ceiling puts the surface above almost everyone’s elbows, which pushes your wrists up and your shoulders into a shrug. Set it to your elbows and stop there, wherever on the range that happens to fall.

Why is my monitor too low the moment I stand up?

Because raising the surface to your standing elbow height raises the keyboard, but a screen sitting flat on that surface only rises by the same amount — while your eyes rose much further, because you stood up. So the screen ends up well below OSHA’s “at or slightly below eye level.” The fix is to lift the screen independently on an arm, riser or stand. The monitor height guide has the geometry.

Is this the same number as the desk height calculator?

No — that one is your seated height, and it is a different, lower number taken in a chair. A sit-stand desk has to hit both: your seated elbow height when the chair is under you and your standing elbow height when it is not. Do I measure with my shoes on?

Measure in whatever you actually wear at the desk. Shoes — especially anything with a heel — change your standing elbow height by a real amount, and a standing mat under you raises it a little more. If your footwear varies, set the desk from your most common combination and nudge it by feel the rest of the time. The desk moves; that is the whole point of buying one that does.
