How to connect two desks

Two desks joined well behave like one big surface. Joined badly, they leave a lip you catch your wrist on and a seam that drifts apart — and the fix starts before you buy the second desk.

Joining two desks is one of the cheapest ways to get a large L-shaped or wraparound work surface, and when it is done well the two behave like a single top — you forget there was ever a seam. Done badly, the join announces itself constantly: a lip your wrist catches on, a step where the mouse stutters across the gap, two tops that slowly drift apart until there is a visible slot down the middle. The difference between those two outcomes is mostly decided before you own both desks, in whether their heights match, and then in how you close and brace the seam. Match the heights first — everything depends on it

The seam between two joined desks is only as good as how level the two tops are with each other. A height mismatch is the single thing you cannot disguise: no bracket closes a step in the surface, and your hands find that step every time they cross it. So the first job, before you think about connectors or gaps, is getting both surfaces into the same plane.

That means two things. Second, the two desks have to finish at the same height. Only once the two tops sit flush, with no step you can feel when you drag a finger across the join, should you move on to fastening them.

Choose the layout: L-shape or side-by-side

There are two common joins, and they ask slightly different things of the hardware. A side-by-side run puts the two desks end to end or long-edge to long-edge to make one wider surface; the seam is a straight line and the connectors mostly need to resist the tops pulling apart. An L-shape sets the second desk at a right angle to the first to wrap a corner; the join is a corner rather than a line, it carries more twisting load, and it usually wants bracing on both faces of the angle, not just a single plate.

Which layout you want is a room-and-workflow question as much as a hardware one — whether you need a long straight run or a corner that puts a second zone within a chair-swivel of the first. Line up the depths and front edges too

Height is the alignment people obsess over, but it is not the only one that shows. If the two desks are different depths, their front edges will not line up, and you get a step at the front of the join where one surface juts out past the other — right where your wrists and forearms rest. Two desks of the same depth are far easier to join cleanly, so match depth when you can. When you cannot, decide which edge matters more — usually the front, where you sit — and align that one flush, letting the mismatch fall at the back against the wall where nothing rests on it.

Rotate the tops slightly as you dry-fit them, before any screws go in, until both the front edges and the surface heights read continuous across the seam. Check the feet, too: two desks pushed together can put their legs or feet almost on top of each other at the join, and a foot that fouls its neighbor stops the tops from sitting flush no matter how carefully you leveled them. Shift a leg, swap a corner foot, or accept a small offset so nothing collides underneath. Getting the dry-fit right — heights, front edges, and feet all clear — is what makes the fastening step permanent rather than a fight.

Fasten the seam so it cannot drift

With heights matched and layout set, push the two tops firmly together and fasten them from underneath so they cannot separate or step out of plane. The workhorse hardware is simple: flat mending plates or steel corner braces screwed across the underside of the seam, or purpose-made desk-connector brackets that do the same job. Spread them along the join rather than clustering one in the middle — a plate near each end of a straight seam, and braces on both faces of an L-corner, keep the tops from hinging or twisting relative to each other.

Where you drive the screws matters as much as the plates. Engineered board holds a screw best in its dense interior and worst at a raw, chippy edge, and how forgiving the core is depends on whether it is MDF or particleboard — a difference worth knowing, laid out in MDF vs particleboard desk tops. Screw into the sturdiest part of each underside, keep clear of the edges, and never drive a fastener longer than the top is thick, or it surfaces through the working side. On a thin or loose-cored top, use a wider plate to spread the load across more of the board rather than a small bracket concentrating it in a few crumbly holes.

Close the gap and route the cables

Even pushed tight, two tops leave some seam, and you get to decide whether that is a flaw to hide or a feature to use. A hairline gap can simply be left; it disappears in use. A wider one can be bridged with a thin filler strip or a seam cover so nothing small drops through and your wrist has continuous support across the join. If the two tops are the same material and finish, a plain strip vanishes; if they differ, a deliberate contrasting strip reads as an intended detail rather than a gap you failed to close.

Better still, put the gap to work. A deliberate small slot at the back of the join makes a ready-made cable pass-through — a free grommet for dropping monitor, power, and peripheral cables down to the floor or a tray without drilling a hole. Plan that before you fasten, so the connectors do not land exactly where you want the cables to pass. If the desks move, or if either is a sit-stand frame, leave the cable slack the travel needs rather than pulling it taut across the seam.

When one L-shaped desk is the better buy

Joining two desks is the right call in a few clear cases: you already own both and want to use them together, you need a size or configuration no single desk offers, or you want to be able to split them apart again when the room changes. In those situations the join is genuinely the economical, flexible answer.

But if you are buying from scratch for a permanent corner, be honest about what two desks actually cost you. A purpose-built L-desk arrives at a single consistent height, with a corner engineered as one piece and no seam that can drift, usually for less than two separate desks plus connectors — and it looks like one object rather than two pushed together. Common questions

Do the two desks have to be exactly the same height?

Can I join two standing desks?

Only with real care, and often it is not worth it. Two independent sit-stand frames raise on separate motors, so unless they move in perfect sync the seam shears — one side rises while the other lags — which stresses any rigid connector between them. If you want an adjustable L, a single frame built for an L-shaped top, or two frames designed to be linked and controlled together, is the sound route. Do not hard-bolt two ordinary standing desks and expect the join to survive daily travel.
