How to hide a power strip under a desk
A power strip belongs off the floor and fixed to the desk itself. Mount it right and it disappears; mount it wrong and it hangs on its own cord or drops under a load of bricks.

A power strip is the one thing on a desk that everybody needs and nobody wants to look at. It is where the whole setup gets its power, so it sits at the root of the tangle — and left to itself it lands on the floor, collects dust, gets kicked, and drags every cable down to the carpet with it. Hiding it well is not really about hiding; it is about mounting it in a fixed, sensible place so it stops being a loose object and becomes the anchor the rest of the cabling hangs from. Do that and it vanishes as a side effect.

Start by getting the strip off the floor
The single most important decision is vertical: the strip should be up on the desk structure, not down on the floor. Height also protects the cords themselves. When the strip lives on the floor, its lead and everything plugged into it get walked on, rolled over by chair casters, and pinched under the desk feet. Check for keyhole slots before you do anything
Turn the strip over and look at the back. A great many power strips have keyhole slotsmoulded into the base — teardrop-shaped holes designed to drop over the heads of two screws so the strip hangs securely on them. This is the manufacturer telling you exactly how they intend the strip to be mounted, and it is almost always the strongest, cleanest option available to you, stronger than any adhesive. If your strip has them, you can skip most of the decision-making below: mark the two screw positions, drive the screws partway into the underside of the desktop or a leg, and hang the strip on them.
If it has no slots, you are choosing between the methods that follow. Either way, checking first costs ten seconds and saves you from sticking a strip up with tape when it was built to be screwed — and from discovering, a month later with everything plugged in, that there was a better mount you never looked for.
Method one: screw or stick the strip to the desk
The most permanent home for a strip is fixed directly to the underside of the desktop or the inside face of a leg, high and out of sight. If the strip has keyhole slots, use them — two screws and you are done. If it does not, and the strip is light, strong adhesive pads or a wide band of hook-and-loop tape will hold it. Clean the surface first so the adhesive actually bonds, and press it home hard; most stick-on mounts that fail failed because they were pressed onto dust.
Here is the honest caution, and it is the one people ignore: cheap adhesive fails under weight.A bare strip is light, but a strip in real use is not — it is a bare strip plus a row of chunky wall-wart chargers and power bricks hanging off it, and that load pulls down on the tape all day. So match the fixing to the loaded weight, not the empty one: for anything heavy, use the screw slots, add screws through a bracket, or move to a tray. Save the adhesive for a genuinely light strip you can lift with two fingers.
Method two: a magnetic strip or a mount tray
Two options give you a solid mount without driving a single screw, which matters if you rent, if the desktop is thin, or if you would rather not put holes in a nice top.
- A magnetic strip— some strips ship with magnets in the base, and any strip can be given magnetic feet. If your desk has a steel frame or a steel underside, the strip simply clamps on and stays, and you can reposition it freely. Give the magnets a firm tug before you trust them with a loaded strip; a magnet that holds a bare strip may creep under the weight of the bricks.
- A mount tray or basket— a shallow tray or wire basket that cradles the strip andthe chargers and bricks plugged into it, then clamps or screws under the desk as one unit. This is the best answer for a heavy, crowded strip, because the tray carries the weight instead of the strip’s own cord or a square of tape. It also keeps the bricks up off the floor with the strip, which is half the point of hiding it.
A tray is the method to reach for whenever the strip is heavy or the desk cannot be drilled, and it doubles as the cradle for the wall-wart chargers that otherwise dangle. Between a magnet on a steel frame and a clamped-on tray, most desks can get the strip mounted solidly without a single screw going into the top.
Method three: velcro or zip-tie it to a rail
If your desk has an under-desk cable tray, a spine, or any horizontal rail, the simplest mount is to lash the strip straight to it with hook-and-loop straps or zip ties. It takes a minute, needs no tools, and holds well because the rail carries the weight. Prefer hook-and-loop over zip ties where you can — you will want to unclip the strip one day to add an outlet or swap it, and a strap you open with a fingernail beats reaching for the snips.
Whichever tie you use, mind the cord where it exits the strip. Do not cinch a zip tie down onto the flat lead itself, and do not run the cord over the sharp edge of a metal tray. OSHA’s guidance against pinching and crushing cords applies directly to a strap pulled too tight: leave the cord room to breathe at the point it leaves the strip, and route it away from any edge that would bite it. A loose, watchable lead lasts; a strangled one is on its way to the damage that takes a cord out of service.
Do not overload the strip or daisy-chain a second one
Mounting solves the tidiness problem; it does not solve the load problem, and the load problem is the one that actually starts fires. Do not overload the strip, and do not plug one strip into another to buy more outlets. OSHA’s flexible-cord guidance is to keep cords from being overloaded or damaged and to retire any cord that is, and a daisy chain quietly does the opposite: it stacks the load of two strips onto one wall outlet and onto the first strip’s cord. Mounting a power strip on a sit-stand desk
A desk that moves changes the rule in one important way: the strip has to be mounted to the moving top, not to the wall and not to the floor. If the strip is fixed to the desk itself, then everything plugged into it — every short lead to a monitor, a lamp, a charger — rises and falls with the desk as one unit, and none of those leads ever has to stretch.
