How to hide cables on the floor
A cable crossing an open floor is a trip hazard before it is an eyesore. The fix is to route it around the room, cover any crossing you cannot avoid with a proper floor cord cover, and keep power leads rated for the load.

Most cable-management advice quietly assumes your desk is pushed against a wall, where an outlet sits a few inches behind it and every cable has somewhere to disappear. Real rooms are messier. The desk faces a window, or sits out in the floor, or the only free outlet is on the far side of the room, and suddenly a cable has to cross open floor to get where it is going. That is a different problem from tidying the back of a desk, and it deserves to be treated as one, because a cable on the floor is a trip hazard and an electrical question before it is an eyesore. This guide is about that specific job: hiding and routing the cables that have no choice but to cross the floor.
Because the stakes are physical, safety leads here and everything else follows from it. That single sentence is the whole design brief for a floor run: the cable should end up somewhere nobody catches a foot on it and nothing gets crushed by being stepped on. Get that right and the tidiness takes care of itself. Get it wrong — a cord snaking across a walkway, a lead tucked under a rug — and no amount of neatness makes it acceptable. So work in that order: make the run safe first, make it invisible second.
The floor is a trip hazard, not a hiding place
The instinct with a floor cable is to make it disappear, and that instinct is what leads people straight to the two things they should not do — running it under a rug, or leaving it flat across the floor where it blends in until someone’s heel finds it. Both hide the cable from your eyes and leave it exactly in the path of feet. The floor is a place a cable has to pass through, not a place it gets to hide the way it hides behind a desk.
Reframe the goal. You are not trying to make the cable vanish into the floor; you are trying to keep it out of the walking path and, where it cannot stay out of that path, to protect the crossingso the cable is neither a trip hazard nor being crushed. It is a longer run than a straight line across the middle, and that is a fair trade: length is cheap, and a cable tucked against a baseboard is out of the way of feet by definition.
So before anything else, look at the room and ask whether the cable can hug the wall the whole way. The hardest case: a desk in the middle of the room
The perimeter trick fails completely when the desk itself sits out in the open, because there is no nearby wall to hug — the cable is exposed the moment it leaves the desk. The honest don’ts
Two shortcuts tempt everyone with a floor cable, and both are the kind of thing a site that cared only about looking tidy would let slide. They are worth stating plainly so you can refuse them on purpose:
- Do not run the cord under a rug.It is the most common floor shortcut and one of the worst. Put it together, then walk it
A floor cable done right is a short sequence. Tidy the cables at the desk and drop them cleanly to the floor. Route along the wall and around the perimeter for as much of the distance as the room allows, so the cable spends almost none of its length in the walking path.
