Where to put a desk lamp
Placement is decided by two things: your writing hand, which sets the side, and your monitor, which sets everywhere the lamp must not go. Get those right and a cheap lamp works; get them wrong and an expensive one becomes a glare source.

A desk lamp is one of the few things on a desk where placement matters more than the product. A well-placed cheap lamp beats an expensive one in the wrong spot, because two of the ways a lamp can fail — casting a shadow across your work, and glaring off your screen — are entirely about where it sits, not what it cost. This page is about the where.
There are only two questions to answer, and they come from two different places. The side is decided by your writing hand. Everywhere the lamp must not go is decided by your monitor. Settle those and the height and angle are quick.
The side: opposite your writing hand
Start here, because it is the rule that is about your body and nothing else. Put the lamp on the side away from the hand you write with. Right-handed, the lamp goes on the left. Left-handed, it goes on the right.
The reason is shadow geometry, and it is worth seeing rather than taking on faith. Light travels in straight lines, so anything solid between the bulb and the surface throws a shadow on the far side of it. Your writing hand is solid and it sits directly over your work. If the lamp is on the same side as that hand, the hand’s shadow falls across the exact spot you are trying to see — the nib of the pen, the line you are on, the small part you are fitting. Move the lamp to the opposite side and the shadow is thrown away from the work, out toward your hand’s far side, where it does not matter.
This applies to anything you do with your hands over a surface: writing, sketching, reading a document you annotate, soldering, model-making, sorting paperwork. If your desk is genuinely nothing but a keyboard and a screen, the shadow rule barely applies — and that is usually a hint that a lamp is not the tool you need, which we come back to at the end.
The monitor decides where the lamp cannot go
The single most common desk-lamp mistake is putting it behind or above the monitor — usually because that corner of the desk is empty and it looks tidy. It is the worst place it can be.
CCOHS states the rule plainly: “Make sure that the task lamp illuminates the document and not the monitor.”A lamp behind the screen does the opposite of that. It throws its light forward — which means forward onto the back and top of the panel, and forward into your face. Light landing on the glass sits on top of the image and washes it out, lifting the dark parts toward grey; light landing on your face is a bright source in your eyeline all day. You have taken a tool meant to light a document and pointed it at the two things it should never touch.
So the monitor draws a no-go zone. Nothing behind it, nothing directly over it, nothing angled so the throw crosses the face of the panel. The lamp lives beside you, forward of the screen, aimed down at the desk in front of you or at the document to one side — never up and back toward the glass. If you are not sure whether your lamp is spilling onto the screen, the fastest check is the mirror test from our guide to reducing screen glare: turn the monitor off, and whatever you can see reflected in the dark glass is landing on it when it is on. If the lamp is in that reflection, move it.
There is a related point CCOHS makes about the screen itself that is worth knowing while you are arranging the desk: place the monitor “parallel (not directly below) with overhead lights,” and “angle the monitor away from lights and windows.”Your lamp is one more light in the room, and the same logic applies to it — keep it off to the side and angled at the work, so it is neither in front of the screen nor reflected in it.
Height and angle
Once the side is settled and the screen’s no-go zone is respected, two adjustments finish the job.
Height.You want the bulb itself above your line of sight when you look down at your work, with the head tilted down onto the surface. A bare bulb sitting at eye level, off to the side, is a glare source in your peripheral vision even when it is lighting the desk perfectly — so lift the head until the bright part is above where your eyes rest and the light comes down at the page. This is the practical case for an adjustable arm over a fixed one: the correct height is a function of your chair, your desk and how close the work sits, and an arm lets you find it by looking rather than by guessing a number. We deliberately do not hand you a height in inches here, because we cannot verify one for your desk and would be inventing it.
Angle. Tilt the head so the light lands on the work and the bulb does not shine back into your eyes. The test is simple: sit as you normally would, and if you can see the bright element of the bulb from your working position, angle it further down or rotate it away until you cannot. You are lighting a surface, not a room, so the beam should be pointed at the surface. A head that swivels and tilts independently of the arm is what makes this easy; a fixed head forces you to move the whole lamp to change the angle, which usually walks it back into the wrong place.
Left-handed, right-handed, and the two-screen case
The side rule flips cleanly with your handedness, and it is worth being deliberate about, because a lot of desks get set up by whoever put the lamp in the box, not by the person who writes at them. Right-handed: lamp on the left, writing hand on the right, shadow thrown right and clear of the page. Left-handed: lamp on the right, and everything mirrors. If two people share a desk and write with different hands, an arm that swings across is the fix — the lamp moves to the correct side for whoever is sitting down.
Two monitors change the geometry only a little. The lamp still goes to the side away from your writing hand, but now watch the height: a lamp tall enough to look over the near screen can end up reflected in the far one, so keep the head low and the throw aimed at the desk in front of you rather than across the panels. If the two screens fill the whole desk and leave you no side clearance, take that as information — it means your work has moved onto the screens, and the light you actually want is around the screens, not a lamp fighting for a corner that no longer exists.
When a lamp is the wrong tool entirely
Here is the honest turn, and it is the same one we make on every lighting page: a lot of people asking where to put a desk lamp do not need a desk lamp. A lamp exists to light a surfaceso you can see objects on it — paper, parts, your hands. If you never look at anything on the desk except through a screen, there is no surface for the lamp to serve, and the problem you actually have is a bright panel in a dim room. That is a different tool.

What we can and cannot tell you
What we can do is describe geometry with confidence: put the lamp opposite your writing hand so it does not shadow your work, keep it out of the space behind and over the monitor so it does not glare off the screen or into your face, and raise and tilt the head so the bulb is above your eyeline and the light lands on the surface. Those are positions, they are checkable, and CCOHS’s document-not-monitor rule anchors the most important one.
What we cannot do is promise those positions will change how your eyes feel. We have not tested a single lamp, and we are not qualified to make a claim about your vision. If your eyes hurt after a day at the desk, the right person to ask has a license, and none of this — useful as the geometry is — is a substitute for that.
Common questions
Which side of the desk should a desk lamp go on?
The side away from your writing hand. If you write with your right hand, the lamp goes on the left; if you write with your left, it goes on the right. The reason is shadows: light coming from the same side as your hand throws the shadow of that hand across whatever it is doing — the line you are writing, the key you are pressing, the part you are holding. Put the light on the opposite side and the hand casts its shadow away from the work instead of onto it. This is the one placement rule that is purely about your own body, and it is the first one to get right.
Should I put a desk lamp over or behind my monitor?
No. A lamp behind or above the screen throws light forward at the panel and at your face, which is exactly the thing CCOHS tells you to avoid — its rule is to “make sure that the task lamp illuminates the document and not the monitor.” A lamp aimed over the top of the monitor lands light on the glass, washes out the image, and points a bright source straight at you. If your goal is to light the area around the screen rather than a document, that job belongs to a monitor light bar, which is built to throw light down and forward without touching the panel. A lamp goes beside you, not behind the screen.
How high should a desk lamp be?
High enough that the bulb itself is above your line of sight when you look at your work, and the head is angled down onto the surface rather than out into the room. As a rough starting point, the light source sitting a little above eye level with the shade or head tilted down keeps the glare out of your eyes while still pooling light on the desk. An arm you can actually reposition matters more than any single number here, because the right height depends on your chair, your desk and how close the work sits — all of which we would rather you set by looking than by a measurement we cannot verify for your desk.
Where do I put a lamp if I use two monitors?
Still to the side, away from your writing hand, and low enough that the head clears the panels — the trap with dual screens is a lamp tall enough to peer over one monitor and reflect in the other. Keep the throw aimed at the desk in front of you, not across the faces of the screens. If the two monitors leave you no side clearance at all, that is usually a sign the desk work has moved entirely onto the screens, and the honest answer is you may not need a lamp so much as light around the screens instead.
Will putting a lamp in the right place stop my eyes hurting?
