Office chair tilt tension, explained
The big knob under the front of the seat is a spring, and setting it is the difference between a recline you can use and one that either dumps you backward or refuses to move. Here is what it does and how to dial it in.

The tilt-tension knob is the adjustment most people never touch, because it does not do anything dramatic when you turn it and it is hidden under the front of the seat where you cannot see it. That is a shame, because it is the difference between a recline you actually use and one that either tips you backward like a deck chair or sits so stiff you forget it is there. It is also one of the few chair adjustments that people declare “broken” when it is simply set wrong. So this page does two jobs: it explains what the knob is, and it turns that into a short troubleshooting guide.
What the knob is: a spring you can pre-load
Inside a tilting chair mechanism is a spring that resists the backrest going back. When you lean, you compress that spring; when you sit up, it pushes you back forward. The tilt-tension control — the big handwheel under the seat front, or on some chairs a crank — changes how far that spring is already compressed before you even sit down. Wind it up and the spring starts from a more loaded state, so it fights the recline harder. Wind it down and it starts slack, so the chair tips back easily.
That is the entire mechanism. It is not setting an angle, it is not locking anything, and it is not raising or lowering the seat. It is one thing: how much force it takes to recline.Because you are winding a real spring through real threads, it usually takes many full turns to change the feel — four or five turns is often the point where you first notice a difference, and that is normal. People give up after one turn, feel nothing, and conclude the control is dead.
Tension is not lock, and not limit
Three different controls get muddled together under the word “tilt”, and keeping them apart is most of the battle:
- Tilt tension — the spring preload above. Governs the effort to recline.
- Tilt lock— a separate lever that freezes the backrest at the angle you are currently holding. On many chairs it locks only at a few fixed positions, or just at fully upright. It governs whether the chair moves at all.
- Tilt limiter— found on better chairs, this caps how far back you can go without locking you rigidly. It governs the range of the recline.
If your chair “will not recline”, check the lock lever before you touch the tension. A great many stiff chairs are simply locked upright, and no amount of loosening the tension knob will help until the lock is released. Conversely, if the chair tips freely but you wanted it to hold an angle, that is a job for the lock, not the tension.
Mechanism types change what “reclining” feels like
The tension knob behaves a little differently depending on the mechanism it sits in, and it is worth knowing which you have, because it explains a lot of “my chair feels wrong” complaints:
- Centre-tilt— the whole seat-and-back assembly pivots around a point roughly under the middle of the seat. When you lean back, the front of the seat lifts and your feet can come off the floor. Cheapest and most common. Nothing wrong with it, but the foot-lift surprises people.
- Knee-tilt— the pivot is moved forward, near your knees, so when you recline the front of the seat stays put and your feet stay planted. More comfortable to lean in for most people, and usually a sign of a better chair.
- Synchro-tilt— the backrest and seat recline together but at different rates, typically around two degrees of back for every one of seat, so the angle between your torso and thighs opens as you lean. This is the mechanism that feels most “designed”, and its tension spring is doing the most work.
None of this is a ranking you should shop on blind — a well-set centre-tilt beats a badly-set synchro. But if you recline and your feet leave the floor, that is the mechanism telling you it is a centre-tilt, not a fault.
Weight-activated mechanisms: the knob that sets itself
Some chairs skip the manual knob altogether with a weight-activatedmechanism, which uses your own body weight to set the recline resistance — sit down and the chair calibrates to you. Steelcase’s Series 1, for one, uses weight-activated controls. These are genuinely convenient and remove the “I never adjusted it” problem, but they trade away fine control: you get the resistance the designer mapped to your weight, not one you can tune. If you are between the extremes it works beautifully; if you are very light or very heavy, a manual knob you can wind to your own preference may serve you better. Neither is “more ergonomic” — they are two answers to the same question.
How to set it, in about a minute
Do this after you have set seat height and depth, not before — the full order is in how to adjust your chair, and it matters, because tension set for the wrong seating position is tension set for a person who is not you.
- Release the tilt lock, if it is engaged. You cannot judge tension against a lock.
- Sit fully back and lean into the backrest with normal effort — the kind of push you would use to think for a moment, not to sunbathe.
- If the chair tips back too easily and you feel like you are falling or have to catch yourself, tighten the knob several turns and retest.
- If the backrest barely moves and you have to strain to recline at all, loosen it several turns and retest.
- You are aiming for the point where you can rock back and return without bracing your feet or gripping the desk, and the chair holds you at whatever angle you stop pushing.
For the target angle, OSHA gives the only figure worth citing: the backrest should recline “at least 15 degrees from the vertical”, and it should “lock in place or be tension adjustable to provide adequate resistance to lower back movement.” Note what that does and does not say. It gives a minimum recline, not a “correct” tension in any unit — because tension is set to you, not to a standard. Anyone quoting you a tilt tension in newton-metres is inventing a precision that does not exist for a knob you turn by feel.
When the tension drifts, and other quiet faults
A few complaints look like a broken tilt and are not. The commonest is a knob that seems to “lose” its setting over weeks — you wound it up, and now the chair tips easily again. Usually the knob has not moved; you have simply gotten used to the setting and are pushing harder than you did on day one, or the spring has settled a little under daily use. Wind it up a touch more and move on. A genuinely worn spring is rarer and shows itself differently: the resistance is gone across the whole range no matter where the knob sits, and running the knob to its stop changes nothing.
The other quiet one is a tilt that feels “notchy” or clunks as it moves. That is almost always the mechanism needing nothing more than to be left alone, or at most a wipe of grit from where the seat meets the base — it is not a tension problem and tightening the knob will not touch it. And if your chair has a weight-activated mechanism with no manual knob at all, there is nothing to wind: the resistance is set by your weight by design, so a recline that feels wrong is a sign the chair is mismatched to your size, not a control you failed to adjust. Knowing which of these you are looking at saves a lot of pointless cranking.
The two failure symptoms, and which is really the tilt
Most tilt complaints are one of two things, and only one of them is actually the tilt.
Too loose:the back tips away under you, you never get a firm return, and you catch yourself when you lean. Wind the knob up. If you reach the stop and it is still slack, the spring or mechanism may be worn — at which point you are into repair-or-replace territory, because a tilt mechanism is not usually a swap-in part the way a caster is.
Too tight:the chair sits rigid, you cannot comfortably recline, and you end up perched forward all day. Check the lock first — nine times out of ten it is engaged. If it is not, loosen the tension.
And the impostor: the seat sinks slowly under you. That is not the tilt at all, however much it feels like the chair sagging. What does the tilt-tension knob actually do?
It sets how much force you have to push with to tip the backrest back. Inside the mechanism is a spring, and the knob changes how far that spring is pre-compressed — wind it up and the spring pushes back harder, so reclining takes more effort; wind it down and the chair tips back more easily. It is not a lock and it is not a height control. It is purely the resistance of the recline.
Which way do I turn it to make reclining easier?
On most chairs the knob is a large handwheel under the front edge of the seat, and turning it counter-clockwise (loosening) reduces the tension so the chair tips back with less effort; clockwise (tightening) increases it. There is no universal standard, though, so if a few turns does the opposite of what you expected, it just means your chair is threaded the other way — keep going in the direction that helps. It often takes many full turns to move it noticeably, which is normal, not a fault.
How tight should tilt tension be?
There is no correct number — it is set to your body weight, not to a spec. The target is simple: heavy enough that you do not fall backward the moment you lean, light enough that you can rock back and forth without bracing your feet or gripping the desk. Set it, then live with it for a day; the recline exists to be used, and a chair you never dare lean into is set too tight.
Should I just keep the tilt locked upright?
Working bolt upright all day is not the target position — it is one end of the range. OSHA’s chair guidance says the backrest should recline “at least 15 degrees from the vertical” and should be lockable or tension-adjustable to give “adequate resistance to lower back movement”. So a lock is useful for holding one angle, but the point of a recline is that you move. Set the tension so leaning is easy, then use it.
My chair leans back too far and won't spring me forward. Is it broken?
Usually not — that is the classic symptom of tension set too low for your weight. Wind the knob up (tighten) several turns and retest. If you have run the knob to its stop and the chair still offers almost no resistance, then the mechanism or its spring may genuinely be failing, which is a different problem from a knob that simply was not wound up. If instead the seat sinks under you rather than the back tipping, that is not the tilt at all — that is the gas cylinder.
