Every office chair sits on the same skeleton: a five-point star base with a wheel or a foot at the tip of each arm. What you put at those five tips is the entire question here. What wheels and glides actually are

A caster is a small wheel on a vertical stem that friction-fits into a socket in each leg of the base. It rolls in any direction and, combined with the seat’s swivel, lets you move the whole chair around your workspace without standing up. A glide is the same stem with a stationary foot instead of a wheel — usually a smooth disc or a low dome of hard plastic, nylon, or felt — that slides a little under a shove but does not roll. Some are sold as “stationary casters” or “chair glides,” and they install exactly the way a caster does: pull the old wheel straight out, push the glide in. Because both share the base, the chair’s swivel, tilt, and height adjustments are untouched by the swap; the only thing that changes is whether the chair rolls.

The case for wheels

Wheels are the default for a good reason. The case for glides

Glides answer a specific frustration: a chair that will not stay put. The cost of all that is mobility, and it is a real cost, not a footnote. With glides you cannot scoot — to reach the far corner of the desk or turn to something behind you, you stand, lift, or shuffle the chair by force. Locking casters — the middle option

The most common type is self-braking: the caster is designed to stay locked while the chair is empty and release to roll once your weight loads it — so the chair holds still as you sit down, then rolls normally once you are in it. Others reverse that logic or add a manual brake you set by hand. None of them make the chair as immovable as a glide, but they solve the single most common rolling complaint — the skate-away as you sit — without asking you to give up scooting for the rest of the day. This is not the same as choosing a caster for your floor

It is worth being clear about a decision this page is often confused with. Glides are a different axis entirely: they stop the rolling.
